I'm wondering if a Novabench score of about 400 is the minimum needed to run Logos 4.

    Hi Steve

My laptop has a score of 268 and I normally find performance of Logos 4 acceptable

Searches are about 2-3 times faster (as per L4's time). Full indexing is about 3x faster. The desktop has better response (lag) times on tabs but I have no issue with the laptop's response! The laptop is slower going to/from Reading View but that reflects the speed/RAM of the graphics cards.

Summary: the desktop is objectively 2-3x faster but it's not noticeable when working with documents & resources. However, I can comfortably work with far more open docs & resources on the desktop (4 core vs 2 core, 4 GB RAM vs 2 GB RAM).

I have a custom built desktop quad-processor that upgraded great from logos 3 to 4 last year, but I HAD TO upgrade my laptop for Logos 4.  I ended up with a Asus laptop that seems to do much better than the Sony Vaio I was on previously.  It just seemed like I was waiting forever with the Sony laptop for the simplest of searches and for the application to boot.

I just now discovered this thread. Neat! Someone mentioned earlier that laptops have a different score based on whether it is run on battery or plugged in. It does.

Both of my systems are 64-bit running under Windows 7 Professional.

My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite A505 that I've had for just less than a year.

Thanks, Dave. My laptop scored a paltry 260. Probably the most aggravating slowness is in the Passage/Exegetical guide when first performing a search or when opening a saved layout. Once everything is open it is fine. I am just wondering if getting an i7 laptop would make a difference - of course, with dedicated graphics card and 4-6 GB RAM and fast drive - that is, would I be able to perceive it. It sounds like I would..

It also seems that we all have a different perception of what is acceptable in terms of performance. I don't necessarily want a good Novabench score as I do quick performance from L4.

I am wondering: can we link the Novabench score to an actual Logos benchmark? Months ago I read a thread here about a more or less standardized method to see how fast Logos4 performed, regardless of the size of your collection. It would be nice to see how the Novabench scores link to a Logos-specific task.

Everything would still be subjective: each of us has a different "performance frustration threshhold." But it would be another tool to balance budget and PC specs when looking for new equipment.

This is an entertaining game to play. However it is so easy to overlook the larger picture. Selecting our new machine based solely on how it will run Logos 4 may not be the wisest avenue. Logos evolves, As does everything else in Cyberland. There will undoubtedly be a Logos 5, And I suspect it will require even more computer resources to function. The best I can figure, I spent about 30% more to get "state of the art" components compared to what I deemed "acceptable" to run Logos. I certainly understand budget constraints, But if we have to revisit the "performance frustration threshold" in a few months...and end up throwing more money at it then, What have we saved? If we buy the bare minimum, the machine is running near Max. all the time. If we provide a buffer, It doesn't work so hard, and actually guards against premature extinction. .... MHO ... Take what you can use, Leave the rest.

I am most fortunate to be at a place in life (empty nest) where I can spend a bit more on PC and software. But I remember well the days when kids, car payments and doctor bills ate up our income, and any PC replacement was a dream. I am happy to spend a bit more now for longer product life. I'm just wondering about the Logos user who is a student, a parent or has kids in college. If you have a cranky PC and needed to replace it on a budget, what should you get that would be satisfactory without forcing you to a ramen noodle diet?

It is a game in a sense. I'm not in the market for a new PC: I purchased one last spring and a netbook last month. But I imagine some prospective buyers are trolling these threads, looking for hints about hardware needs. I am still wondering: what is the real world, base-line computer that is adequate to run Logos 4? Can we link Novabench standards to Logos performance and find a consensus model of what to buy to "get in the door?"

I too am concerned for the ones who have to decide whether to buy a new toy or eat. To them I would suggest making the best of a bad situation. Typically, the older motherboards and processors will suffice if coupled with a decent graphics card, HD, and adequate ram. All of which are pretty much plug and play. Upgrading these components can greatly improve the experience and still allow one to have Mac and Cheese, instead of Ramen. eBay has a treasure trove of hand-me-downs to consider whilst munching ramen. And tweaking an old system can be another enjoyable game for those on a shoestring.

For those considering a new rig:

Processor -> i5 works well, i7 if one does a lot of multitasking.

Ram -> Windows 7 uses up to 1.5GB at Idle so 4GB is a bare minimum. 6GB would be "adequate." The issue here is that most laptops have 2 slots which requires installing a 4GB and a 2GB stick. Many believe that things work better when installed in pairs. (same amount in both slots) so we are at 8 for the best overall performance.

HD -> Don't scrimp here. Very little cost difference form entry level to a good drive. At least 7,500rpm, 10,000 is better. A little more money provides a quieter, cooler drive, and a noticeable performance boost.

Dedicated Graphics -> One can get by with 512MB, Naturally, you will be happier with 1GB. If you plan to play games, watch movies, or connect an external (or multiple) monitor, a better card is desired.

    Again...MHO

Edit: Full Disclosure: I too have a netbook. Mine scores just a bit under yours. It does well for what it is. When I am sitting by a babbling brook, I can just relax and birdwatch while the netbook sloths through it's searches. If it were my only machine, I fear my lack of patience would show.

Yes. Get the best you can afford. If battery life is important then you need to find i7's that give more than 1.5 hrs!

    Ton,

I am very puzzled by your CPU specs. Is it truly a Pentium II processor or has it been misidentified? I have never heard of a Pentium II that could run at 3.2 Ghz let alone address 3 gig of RAM. I suspect it has been mislabeled by Novabench. Just curious.

I knew it had to be something much more than a Pentium II. I wonder why Nova bench identified it as such? But I have learned over the years that no utility is infallible. PC Wizard says that I have 8 Gig of RAM when in fact I only have 4. And CPUID Hardware Monitor says my motherboard temperature is 9 degrees C (48 degrees F). Pretty nice trick since the ambient temp is 69 degrees F.

    • HD: Western Digital Caviar Black 2TB SATA2 7200RPM 3.6MS 64MB
    • Coolermaster case and additional heat sink
    • Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit

Costs about the same as my first ever PC which was an IBM 286 clone with 40MB hard disk and 1MB of RAM, if I recall. Wow, computing has come a long way since 1987 or whenever that was!

    Logos4 runs very smoothBig Smile

All I can say Steve is - WOW!!!!! I had seen the new Sandy Bridge benchmarks in several tech magazines but I guess it really didn't click in my mind just how fast they are. I was looking at upgrading in the next couple of months. Your posting here may move that date up. [:D]  What is really nice about the CPU's is the price/performance ratio is incredible.

Can I ask what hard drive you are running? And is this 64 bit Win 7 or 32 bit?

    Blessings,

    Bob

Finally ordered my new PC from a local place that custom builds them. I can't wait to benchmark it when it comes and take Logos for a spin on it. It's gonna fly!

Nice, Bob! Congrats. Is there a noticable difference in L4, and if so, where?

P.S.  I have to say I like "infinity" more.   Wink

Load time is slightly faster (about 4 seconds) and Logos seems much more responsive overall. The new card uses DDR5 memory vs. DDR3 so that part of the difference. I paid $20.00 less for the new card ($89.00) than I did for the original. Caught a great sale.

I'll be impressed if somebody comes up with "Infinity and beyond" [:)]

    Blessings,

    Bob

    It's Win 7 64-bit. 32-bit can't run more than 4GB.

Duh me! [:S] Of course you are correct Larosa. I overlooked the obvious.

Your benchmark is quite impressive as well. Another Sandy Bridge CPU I see.

Yeah, I was quite surprised at the performance of this thing given that I only spent about $1100 on it. My budget sure is thanking me.

    Bob,

    Here are the stats:

HP Pavilion Elite HPE-570t customizable Desktop PC

    • • Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2600 quad-core processor with Turbo-Boost [up to 3.8GHz, 8MB cache]
    • • 16GB DDR3-1333MHz SDRAM [4 DIMMs]
    • • 2TB 7200 rpm SATA 3Gb/s hard drive
    • • 1GB ATI Radeon HD 5770 [dual-link DVI, HDMI, DP, VGA adapter]
    • • LightScribe 16X max. DVD+/-R/RW SuperMulti drive
    • • 15-in-1 memory card reader, 1 USB, audio, with USB 3.0 card
    • • Beats Audio -- integrated studio quality sound
    • • Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

I upgraded from an older dual core and the difference is huge.  The new Sandy Bridge is no doubt the best bang for the buck. I cannot emphasize enough how smooth and quick L4 runs on this system.  No frustration, only joy with L4. You can customize a machine at hp.com
