I Wonder If It's Just Me...
Although I rarely posted on the old newsgroups I frequently read and enjoyed the engaging dialogue. I find myself missing some of those, uh, free-flowing moments when interesting personalities emerged in the middle of passionate debate. In retrospect, at times, it had an almost wild west feel. Maybe it's just me but for some reason this current forum structure seems to have tamed the Wild West, and frankly, I miss those days! Does anyone else have a clue what I'm talking about?

YES... did you want to start a debate[;)]... I'm still not impressed with this format, nor with some of the newest editions I see in the prepubs. But then maybe I'm too old school and not open minded enough? rrm

I do not know if it is the fault of the format. Maybe? Maybe not? It's just that under the old way there were long threads where people actually got engaged in interesting conversations. Recently it seems the posts are not as...good-naturedly vociferous? They are just---yawn---well, you know.

I agree that the sense of community that kept me reading the newsgroups doesn't occur in the forums. But I am also distracted by the rebuilding of my Bible study site - which will include Logos PBB's (http://lbs.layliturgy.org/)

Just wait till Google Wave comes out. Logos will abandon the Forum and move on to the next thing :-)

Careful you don't rile up those folks that only use the KJV interlinear, to prove Calvinism, and disprove feminism, or to prove feminism and disprove Calvinism....[;)]

Uh-oh. I wasn't trying to start anything--honest!! My question/comment had more to do with the zeitgeist of the new forums.

It would be nice to have some off topic forums. A place for users to fellowship, discuss, debate, and even argue (in Christian love of course).

i never used the old forums. I really didn't know anything about them.
As for debates, I was thinking of suggesting that they have an additional "forum section" for group studies. Eg, form a study around a Logos resource, say "OT Theology" by Paul House, or "5 Perspectives on ______________", or an issue of CHristian History, or . . . "How KJV only-ers disprove feminist Calvinism". Seriously, though, it could work. I would be interested for a "time-framed" discussion of a book. Let's say, "for 6 weeks we will study ____________" and kick off discussion for the previous week's reading on Wednesdays".

Sounds like a book club. Everyone reads it then gathers for discussion at the local bistro. [C] Can you imagine what the demographics would be? 42 chiefs and 3 indians. (I can say that because my wife & kids are all citizens of the Chickasaw Nation.) I would just hate to be the author everybody is discussing. Seeing how Zondervan, Dan the Man, and Christian History Magazine have fared in these fora.
I may be wrong but the hotly debated threads in the forums are either doctrinally based (which will never see resolution here) or they are about suggested resources that are not yet available in Logos. (Ray Stedham, various interlinears, and the currently active "Geneva Bible" suggestion.)
Though it would be fun.
If I had every Logos resource available would I still hang out here? I would like to think not........ but let's be honest.

Kinda reminds me of the "Inklings"--the group formed by Tolkien and C. C. Lewis (along with several others). They got together every week and read out loud some of the things they were working on and then debated it. Would have loved to been a fly on the wall in that group!!
Maybe we could do something similiar online?

I have seen some things get pretty heated here. I think one thing some
people hide behind is anonymity. I like that the forums don't allow so
much for that here. Some of us even got our pictures up. Another thing
with the NG is you got everything in the group you signed up for.If you speak for God and good then speak proudly, if not then sit down and shut up. Let's see where that goes...or doesn't.

Should the forum add a category for Christians where we can bring our understanding together and mutually exhort and encourage each other? While I'm sure this is not Logos intent, I feel a lot could be learned. The downside is obvious. People on the forum can be dogmatic and sometimes dogma is purely unbiblical.
