Microsoft duplicates web-based Communities such as:
http://www.microsoft.com/office/community/en-us/FlyoutOverview.mspx
so that they also appear on Usenet newsgroup servers under:
news.microsoft.com
If that were feasible, it gives the best outcome:
-
Users discover web forums more easily than Usenet;
-
Seasoned
contributors have the power of their preferred newsreader
(search, flagging, filtering, sorting, …) to provide support for those
who want help.
I can’t comment on how difficult it would be to set this up,
but it works well.

I don't think I have seen anything else on this in recent weeks, so whether or not this concept has been abandoned completely or not nothing has been said.

The big difficulty would be with user accounts. Posting messages to each forum would not be that big a deal. Tying it to a user account would be a bigger issue.
