Frustrated trying to search for basic things

To begin, I fully acknowledge that this is user error. My plan is to finish my infamous note export and then commit to learning this program. So I haven't been able to do that yet. That said, Logos seems to go out of it's way to make it difficult to use.

Looking for Exodus 1 in the ESV (ok, fine, I wanted Ex 1-2, but giving it too chapters seemed to be more than it can handle), but it gave me Gen 15:13 instead.

Then I searched for a word, and got "no results" which I know is not true.

In my mind if I "search" for something, it is obviously a query to find what I am looking for, so I think it should find Bible verses or words if I set it to the ESV. However, assuming this is the problem, I opened up the "Bible" tab (as opposed to search) and it is still not working.

If I go to Accordance and I type "jochebed" it will connect the dots and look for a word. If I type "ex 1-2" it will likewise open the chapters of Exodus 1-2. I can force it to only look up verses, or only look up words, but by default I can type both into one box without needing to preform multiple steps of clicking various things.

I am attaching a screenshot.

Thank you for any help anyone can provide.

For the first part, you are getting Genesis 15:13 etc because you are SEARCHING for "ex 1" in the Bible Search box, rather than telling it to go there. :-) It comes up with those references because it's finding a reference to Ex 1 in the cross references.

You'll want to open this to see your Bible

As for the Jochabed problem… that's an easy fix too.

See the "Ae" in the far right side? That's to have your search match your capitalization. Since you didn't capitalize the J, it didn't have any matches. If you unselect that, it will work.

    Here's with it selected.

    And here's with it unselected.

And here's with it selected but with a capital J

See all these tabs under Search? All | Bible | Books | Factbook etc? None of those will take you directly there - they will only search (the links in the searches might get you there).

Hope that helps! There will probably be a bit of a learning curve coming from Accordance, but the basics aren't too difficult. On the flip side, I tried using Accordance when they offered the free package and I was too used to Logos's setup and I found it confusing.

Beginning a line with ">" is indeed the correct way to do the quote. You have to press the spacebar after >.

if I want the actual text (Ex 1) AND all the footnotes, I can find that through the "search" tab

Yes, you can accomplish this by performing a Bible search.

if I ONLY want the Bible and no footnotes, then I used the "bible" tab. Is this correct?

If you only want to search through the surface text, you can accomplish this by clicking on All Bible Text and selecting Surface Text under SEARCH FIELDS. If I just want to jump to a Bible reference, however, I will typically open my top Bible and use the Lookup Box that you and @Justin Gatlin had discussed.

Your first search is doing a search for Exodus 1 in the Bible. Notice that the footnote is highlighted: it found what you asked it to find, in a footnote.

To lookup something in the Bible, click the Bible icon and type it in at the top, or click the Logos icon and type your Bible reference there.

The issue with Jochebed is that you have search set to case sensitive. Look at the Aa by your search box and unclick it.

If you click the Logos icon on the top left and type in "Jochebed" it will give you lots of options in a drop-down, one of which is to look it up in your top Bible.

    Hi Krisin,

Sorry you are having troubles. I think that I can add some insight into the results you are getting.

The reason why you get a hit of Gen. 15:13 is because of your search criteria. You searched for "ex 1" and Exodus 1 is mentioned in Exodus 15:13 in the ESV footnote so it was a positive hit.

As far as searching for "jochebed" in the ESV, my return was the two verses you mentioned. (see attachement). I'm not sure exactly why you didn't get the same result.

    Hi @Justin Gatlin, @Bruce Dunning, and @DMM,

Thank you all for your help. Concerning the Jochebed issue, ya, as soon as I deselected the Aa, it fixed the issue! So thank you.

Regarding Ex 1, I am still confused how to get there. That is really interesting how it is finding the footnotes (and something I can see being useful at some time), but I don't understand why if I search for Ex 1 in the ESV, that ONLY the footnotes are a hit. Isn't Ex 1 included. That said, I think I MIGHT understand.

    1. If I "search" for Ex 1, it will exclude Ex 1 in the text, and only find footnotes. Odd, but ok.
    2. If I go to the "bible" there are two search text boxes. If I type in the lower box, it will act the same as point 1 above. If I type in the upper box, it will find the biblical reference. Is this correct?

I will attach another screenshot to see if this is correct.

Thank you again for your help.

The search is not looking for the reference to Exodus 1. It is looking in the text for the phrase "Ex 1." The search window is just not the right place to look to Scripture references in Logos.

You're correct on your second point: Opening a Bible gives you both the lookup box (where you put in Exodus 1) and an inline search box (where you put in Jochebed). Again, you can click the Logos icon on the top left of your screen and type something in and choose which behavior you want from the drop-down menu.

@Kristin I'm confused with the trouble you seem to be experiencing. I'm not seeing this when I perform a search of "ex 1" in the Bible search tab. What comes after Gen 47:11 in your search? You are searching through the Bible in the Bible search tab. This will find all instances of ex 1 in the Bible, including the 22 verses of that chapter.

    Hi @Justin Gatlin ,

Thank you for clarifying this. I guess in my mind if I "search" in the Bible, it would bring up Bible verses, but I think that has been a lot of my issue.

    Hi @Aaron Hamilton,

Oh my gosh, that never occurred to me to keep scrolling! You are right. So it shows everything in book order, showing footnotes which come before exodus, THEN it showed exodus, then after exodus it went back to showing footnotes.

So if I want the actual text (Ex 1) AND all the footnotes, I can find that through the "search" tab, and if I ONLY want the Bible and no footnotes, then I used the "bible" tab. Is this correct?

BTW, can you remind me how you did that quote? I thought it was shift carrot but that isn't working.

    Hi @Aaron Hamilton,

Thank you for your help, and ya, that fixed it selecting the surface text. I think I might finally know how to look up a Bible verse two ways now. :) I am grateful there is a way to look up Bible verses starting with search, as that is more instinctive, but I will practice both ways.
