Logos Will Not Start When Offline

My logs are attached, but it seems like it is hanging up on the citation engine. If I connect to the internet when it is stuck, I have to manually close the program.

I was able to run Offline with Verbum 40 Beta 3.

Found that Smart Search would run the Smart query as Precise because "you are offline"!

To clarify, if I connect to the Internet, load Logos, and then disconnect, it runs normally. But I can't get past the splash screen without a connection.

My desktop, also running beta 3, does start fine in airplane mode. Both computers are running up to date Windows 11. I'm not sure what could be causing those issues on my laptop, but I can definitely see the system hanging in the logs.

    Your uploaded Logos.log states:
2025-02-14 16:48:32.4120 INFO 1 LogosApplication | The last session did not shut down completely.

and the CEF log may contain the reason for that:
[0214/164309.951:ERROR:gpu_process_host.cc(942)] GPU process exited unexpectedly: exit_code=1073807364
[0214/164309.951:WARNING:gpu_process_host.cc(1292)] The GPU process has crashed 1 time(s)
[0214/164309.962:ERROR:network_service_instance_impl.cc(541)] Network service crashed, restarting service.
[0214/164309.992:ERROR:gpu_process_host.cc(942)] GPU process exited unexpectedly: exit_code=-1073741205
[0214/164309.992:WARNING:gpu_process_host.cc(1292)] The GPU process has crashed 2 time(s)

This seems to be the session you disconnected but the GPU crashed and probably affected the restart in the uploaded log.

    Is this repeatable?

I repeated it multiple times before but now I can't in v 40. I'm not sure if it was fixed or if it is a fluke but I can't recreate it now.

I wasn't keen to replicate it, so I'm happy that it appears to have gone away!

It is important for Logos to be capable to run offline. Not only for translators in the middle of nowhere, but also nowadays when the future of the Internet or perhaps the whole world is uncertain. Well, if I am in and underground bomb shelter, will I be able to concentrate on some tricky Bible study using the original languages, is a different story!

Something similar happened to me when I started to use my laptop. The 5G mobile network modem is slow to start, so Logos attempted to start but was waiting something from the Internet for the home screen. When the Internet started, Logos just kept on hanging. Then I closed Logos and started it again. Now it was hanging at the startup screen. I had to restart the whole laptop, and after that Logos consented to start. I did not check the version of Logos when it started the first time, but usually I have the latest, sometimes the laptop lagging behind.

I recommend reporting your issue separately, with logs. Ensure you use the Beta Desktop forum only if running a Beta version (v.40 beta may soon replace v39.1).
Can you chose Work Offline when the app is started with CTRL key?

I am using the Beta update channel. Currently it shows v40, no decimal. I can reproduce the problem if the Internet is off.

I tested starting Logos with the CRTL key and it works fine, although the messages in the screen might be confusing.

In this morning the problem was shown up because the 5G modem woke up too slowly, and I was unaware of that.

The recipe to reproduce the problem:

Switch on the computer without the Internet connection.

    1. Start Logos normally. It may not show the startup screen properly, but may work until it needs the Internet.
    2. Close Logos normally.
    3. Start Logos over again. You will see the blue start square. And nothing happens after that.

Can you chose Work Offline when the app is started with CTRL key?

I can reproduce the problem if the Internet is off.

    To clarify expected behavior:

Logos should always work in its "Offline" mode.

    So, these are supported:

    • In Logos's Program Settings, you have set "Use Internet" to No.
    • You hold down the Ctrl or Cmd key while Logos launches, and select "Work Offline."
    • "Use Internet" is set to Yes, but when Logos launches it can't connect the internet, and offers to "Work Offline" instead.

Internet-based features like Atlas and Smart Search will be unavailable, but otherwise Logos can run completely locally.

However, you may experience trouble when Logos was launched "online" and:

    • Your internet connection is very slow or intermittent.
    • A firewall or other security software is blocking Logos's internet access.
    • You opened Logos on your laptop at the office, left it running, and now on the train ride home, it no longer has an internet connection.

In those scenarios, most internet-based features will "fail gracefully" with a generic error message; but Logos might seem to fail in surprising ways as it keeps unsuccessfully trying to make web calls in the background.

    So, rule of thumb:
If you have a strong internet connection, use Logos online.
If not, use "Work offline" mode.

Thanks Adam, good to clarify that.

In my case it was a situation, formerly unbeknownst to me, that the 5G modem woke up after I had started Logos.

Then, after starting Logos again, Logos hangs, and I must restart the computer in order to get Logos to start.

As a bonus below is a picture of my new 5G modem system, with a measurement antenna connected. In the city it provides 245 Mbit/s. Actually it varies considerably.

Veli, I can't guess why you would need to restart the computer. Would you be better off just using Logos offline? What Logos features are you using that require internet?

Smart search needs an Internet connection and Atlas, and also probably many other features.

The source of my problem is the new modem that takes some minutes to do all the starting.

Now, when I know that, it is not a problem anymore.

But the Logos problem is real: if I start Logos normally and Internet is not working, then Logos works more or less well. But after closing Logos and then when I start Logos for the second time, Logos hangs, whether Internet is on or not. You can try it!
