I'm constantly impressed by Logos drive for confusedness. I knew the 2 toolbars great idea; helpful in confusing newbies. I didn't know even the 'really easy one' is inconsistent too.

The web app has always been "inconsistent" with the desktop app. The toolbar here is not primarily to blame, but the missing features.

Thank you both for the clarification. If I understand correctly, while I can open the Factbook on the web, the little tags in the text aren't available on the web. That is totally fine, I just thought I was missing it.

Likewise, the cross-highlighting is also not on the web. That is a little less practical, but ok. The web version actually sort of makes me nervous since I have had bad experiences with syncing in the past (not on Logos).

So if I created a highlight on the web version, for example, then I go back to the app and click the sync button, I get worried that it will erase all of my hard work on the app and sync it to the web version, or something like that.

On a side note, if I am on the app version and I want to make sure my work is saved, if I click the sync wheel, that functionally saves my work. Is that correct?

Correct.

Edit: it would be more correct to say it syncs your work (which happens automatically, even if you don't manually click it).

The work you do on the web app is saved automatically (just as it is on desktop and mobile). There's nothing you need to do to save your work.

Oh, I wasn't blaming the poor innocent toolbar. I just remember (bad habit) Phil's plan for the web as leader, fast-development, quick fixes. Now we effectively have 4 UI's from the same company, while missing 'the easy one'.

Same here. Maybe under the philosophy of the squeaky wheel getting the grease, I don't need the Web version at all, and even what it can do is remarkable to me. Rather, I just really, truly, genuinely, need the ability to have more than one layout open at a time.

In this specific situation, I had been deep in a project I had been working on until 3am last night and there is no way I could close it. Yet I had to teach a class. My plan was to teach it in Logos (my first try doing so), since I have been messing with a class layout. Yet I truly couldn't close my work, so I thought of maybe using the web version?

Yet it wound up just being too different from the app to be practical, so I went off to Accordance for my class.

I understand that only having one layout open at a time must work well for pastors (I guess), but for those of us who are involved in very technical types or research, it just isn't realistic.

You really should consider installing Verbum. I know this has already been discussed … a lot. But they're kissing cousins … pretty much all the same. Handy in a pinch.

I think this is a good example of why I wish Logos had a message center, but since it doesn't….

I am confused about Verbum. I thought it was some sort of company Faithlife owned before Logos, so then people who used to own Verbum still can use it, but for new people it is something of the past. Yet that isn't the case?

Given what you wrote, I just searched for it online and it is some sort of Catholic resource? Is it something that comes with my Logos account, or is it something which is separate? Would my Logos products open in it?

I am just super confused, but if it would let me open another layout at the same time, I am very interested.

It's like you have your Toyota Camry, and your Toyota Corolla. Logos and Verbum are made in same factory (programmers). They make them different colors and for one, sermons, the other homilies (word change). Verbum has a few liturgical extras. And they both do everything each other does … same libraries, subscriptions, user settings, layouts, bugs!

And yes Verbum is supposed to be Catholic, but more like liturgical. Either or both you can get with your account (one account).

That's why it's handy to use both in a pinch. Try it.

Ok, thank you for the explanation. I just downloaded it and it is going through this exhaustive process getting info from Logos. I admit it is hard to not hold my breath as I am nervous about it erasing my sermon I have spent the past three days on, but hopefully it won't eat my work, and it seems important to download in order to have more than one layout open at a time. Thank you again for the explanation.

If you don't mind, I really do have a syncing concern. (I really did have a pretty catastrophic syncing situation a few years ago in Accordance and it has left me pretty jumpy about syncing).

So I know if I sync on Logos it is safe, since I don't make changes on the web version. Yet now with Verbum, you said they share Layouts. If I create a layout in Verbum and press the sync button, is there a risk of Logos syncing to look like Verbum and deleting things I created in Logos?

Maybe it would help if I explain the situation. I had worked on a detailed highlight system in Accordance which had taken years to do (no exaggeration). I then went to a coffee shop with my iPad and in the Accordance iPad app I spent a few hours highlighting the entire book of Mark, for a specific reason which was disconnected to my normal highlights.

I then went back home and opened Accordance and my Mark highlights weren't there. I then saw a little box asking me if I wanted to sync highlights from the iPad. So I said I did, as I thought it would add my Mark stuff.

However, instead of adding Mark, it literally deleted all of my highlights I had spent years on to sync it to look like the iPad version. It was so catastrophic that I wound up needing to do a TimeMachine backup.

So…. how do I prevent something like that happening if I do work in Verbum?

Well, first, let's be honest. Thru my days with Faithlife (2005-now), there have been some blips … sync problems, lost sermons, and so forth. If I had to guess, I'd say maybe 2 per year. At most. As a percent of users, that's really tiny. And there have been more cases, of NOT sync'ing. It's on one PC but not the other, etc.

But sync-ing is one of Faithlife's pride and joys. They're pretty reliable. They have backups and so forth.

Remember a layout only appears in your Logos or Verbum, if you load it. The exception might be if you specify a layout in startup (settings). But they don't destroy each other. Now, I've never tried the same layout in Logos and Verbum at exactly the same time. But for example, they do share highlights, and so forth.

I don't think you're going to experience a disaster with Faithlife. It's quite solid. To make sure for yourself, in your Logos, create a simple who-cares layout . Let it sync. And then try something similar in Verbum … and see how they interact for you.

It won't be Accordance (multiple layouts). But better than the web and desktop as alternatives.

Thank you for clarifying this. This is a super ignorant question, but regarding syncing concerns, the issue is if I open Verbum and make some sort of change and then go back to Logos, and that may or may not work correctly.

However, if I don't make any changes in Verbum, I simply open it to teach a class, and then close it, so I didn't do anything but view something, that is harmless regarding syncing. the issues might be if I try to make changes in Verbum and then how that might affect Logos. Is this correct? (Also, I understand you said that Faithlife is very reliable, but I just want to be extra careful.)

Also, regarding the backups, if Verbum did delete a sermon or something, it would be in my trash and I could go retrieve it. Likewise, a sermon which I created a month ago (hypothetically) and has never been opened in Verbum, would not be in any peril, so IF something like that happened, I would know something happened and would be able to retrieve it. Correct? That syncing issue I had a few years ago really did affect my view of syncing as a whole.

I really think you should just try it out, and test for yourself . Forum assurances or even Faithlife assurances are never as good as trying it. Use non-essential layouts.

Remember: a layout is what you save to layouts. Or load from layouts. It's not a dynamic view, that is coordinated between Logos and Verbum … or even Logos on PC-1 vs Logos on PC-2.

And if super-worried, name your layouts different between Logos and Verbum. Sync'ing won't affect each other.

That is a good idea, thank you. :) I think I will do this method you said (as I am super-worried). However, I have been thinking a lot about it since I wrote last, and I think that something I need to remember is that it won't ever be as serious as it was in Accordance, since, thank God, I can export my work. If a layout gets deleted or something, that might be annoying, but for sure not a big deal. What would matter are the notes and sermons, and I will for sure be exporting those regularly. I am in the process of importing some important class notes as sermons and after I am done, I will export it all, and then go from there.

I just wanted to thank you for the Verbum idea! I was (am) super involved in something in Logos I just can't close, so I opened Verbum and did the extra research and saved it under a Verbum layout name. It helped so much, so thank you! It is for sure not the same as my 25 Accordance Workspaces open, but for sure far more practical than just one Layout. :)
