Bad File on Logos FTP Site

I've tried to download ESVSB.lbxlls four times so far and each time it gets to the end of the download, sits there a minute and then quits with an unsuccessful download. The file is 245 meg and it's just been on the FTP site about a week or so.

I have no problems with any other file.

What is the FTP path you're downloading it from? I had no problem downloading it just now by right-clicking on it under "Download Book File" on http://www.logos.com/ebooks/details/ESVSB, which links to ftp://ftp.logos.com/lbxbooks/ESVSB.lbxlls. Maybe it's not a bad file but something going wrong with your connection while downloading such a large file (it took 15 minutes for me). What software are you using to download it? There is ftp software built into most web browsers and I'm guessing that's probably what you're using. Try a different method or a different browser. Or try a download manager that will remember where you were and resume where you left off if you're downloading a large file and got interrupted partway through. There are lots of free ones. Just Google "download manager" ftp resume to find some. I don't know a particular one to recommend, so check out reviews.

I suppose I should have mentioned.....

I regularly run ftpsync in my xp mode to stay up to date with changes and new files on Logos' server. I don't suppose I have a good reason for doing so anymore, however I have not had a problem in years and have downloaded some pretty large files.

I'll try it again......

FTP was still unsuccessful with the file. I finally used the method you mentioned and downloaded it with no problems.

I see no evidence that files downloaded from the Logos web site through a browser use the FTP protocol so possibly there's something different between the download and FTP protocols.

At any rate, I now have it on my NAS drive. Thanks.

Yesterday I think the ESVSB on the Logos ftp site was 257003856. Today it is 226334528.

So something's happening.

One possibility, if one FTP utility/method works and another does not, it may be the older program is not supporting a feature of the FTP services protocol that a newer server is using. From a brief Google it looks like FTPSYNC is pretty old, and ftp between servers and clients has evolved. I suspect Logos has a newer ftp server implementation, so maybe this file or the transmission of it requires/utilizes some new ftp feature that is supported in the ftp implementation of a current browser.

Well, once again the download failed. And of course it deleted the file I'd already successfully downloaded from the server. This is getting somewhat tiring.

I have used FTPsync for years and it won't run in Windows 7 so I use my XP mode. FTPsync is the only (free) FTP program I have ever found that will search the files on an FTP server and compare them to the files on my local computer, pointing to the files which are different (newer) on the server and then downloading them.

There are other protocols for downloading files besides FTP. I believe browsers generally use HTTP format rather than the FTP protocol to download files.

I still keep a copy of Logos 3 current on an older laptop, and I use JTftp to sync it. Just did it yesterday in fact, on Windows 7, and it works great, still. No problems with current Logos ftp server or files. It does a compare/match/sync just like ftpsync:

FYI, browsers do use ftp protocol. That doesn't say a particular web page doesn't provide an interface to download a file via http, but have an http server is not a requirement for running an ftp server, so if you tried to access that ftp server through http it would fail. Any URL that starts with ftp:// instead of http:// is using ftp protocol, although they don't have all the bells and whistles of the ftp clients. If you Google "ftp protocol internet explorer" you will see lots about it.

I have a copy of Logos 3 here on my workstation. It accesses resources on my NAS (Network Attached Storage) which is where I store files FTP'ed from Logos.

I recall Logos users referring to another program similar to FTPsync, but had forgotten its name. I believe JTftp was written by a Logos user. As FTPsync hasn't been supported for years, I may put a copy of JTftp on my workstation just in case. Did you attempt to download ESVSB.lbxlls with it?

I have my own web server, an old Dell, here in the shack. It is also set up to work with MySQL, php, FTP and so on. Mainly it serves brokensinner.org (Flash) and my webcam (FTP) which is linked from gagme.org. So you might say I'm a little familiar with web protocols.

I did not download it specifically but when I sync'd yesterday morning, Oct 26 around 7:22 AM EDT, I got it without error. According to its File Properties:

245 MB (257,002,856 bytes)

JTftp no longer gives out registration numbers, at least not through my Firefox. I didn't bother trying Chrome or IE9b.
