Need Help Please

The Scripture is 1Cor 5:5

Will someone please tell me how I can get more meaning out this word [deliver] and the Scripture its self by using the Greek Morph [aorist, active, infinitive] I have spent a lot of time going over and over the learn videos and its nothing but a lot of confusing to me. I love L4 and wouldn’t trade it but I have to tell you to me the Greek video especially is a big disappointment.

Johnny how about you coming on here and helping? I would like you to know that I am totally frustrated and dispointed. Its sure not as easy as it was made out to be at least not for me. I did not expect it to be easy. But I have spent hours on this video and i think it gets more confusing all the time.

How about doing a Bible Word Study on it? I think it will give you more of the kind of information that you want than a morph search.

Just right-click on the word παραδοῦναι and select Bible Word Study.

The Bible Word Study returns a great variety of information.

Thanks Alan I can sense a kindness about you that I probably did not show in my post. But I am so disappointed that I cannot learn the Morph part from the videos. I have tried so hard and guess without any experience in Greek and Hebrew and with no seminary experience I can’t expect anything different.

I have tried the word study but i will try it again. in looking at commentaries it is a controversial Scripture anyway

Hi Sam,

I use the Exegetical Guide set up to only populate on words I select. As you can see below, the information provided gives you the morphology and explanation of each of the items. If you want more grammatical discussion, depending on what resources are in your library, you can open the grammar section to see if there is any additional information explaining the morphology. You can also right click on the word and select to search the morphology rather than the lemma. However, without understanding the morphology you may get results that provide you no additional value in your study. I suggest you pick up a book called "Greek for the Rest of us" by William Mounce or go to www.biblicaltraining.org and review the basics of Greek. It will not teach you the language, but will make it so you can understand the more technical commentaries as well as gather additional information from the Exegetical Guide and basic morphology.

Sam in this case the morphology won't be too revealing. Aorist is simply point in time or snapshot action. Active is the person speaking doing the action (Paul). Infinitive is a verbal noun in this case best translated as 'to deliver' and the complement of 'I have decided' (which doesn't appear in the Greek and must be supplied from the context.

One thing that a better understanding of original languages gives you is the ability to know or sense at least when a construction or word is significant and when it is not. In this case the construction is very routine and not at all significant. I think the promos for the video series over promise on what you can actually get from just watching them. As Alan suggested anything significant in this case might be gained from a word study. Honestly even that isn't going to unravel the questions you might have on this statement. The way Paul uses this word is simply open to question and that is why commentators have some different views.

People vary in how they adapt to other languages. Be realistic about that so you don't get too discouraged. It may be that your intended use of L4 would benefit from laying a foundation in Greek and Hebrew. That's what I found. There are free resources, e.g. search "LitteGreek101", acclaimed self-study books such as by Mounce, and online classes.

There are several Greek and Hebrew classes for free on iTunes (though you might have to buy the books used to be able to profit fully from them. I don't know if any happens to use books available in Logos; you'll have to find that out for yourself).
