Logos 4 and proxy settings

I've just installed Logos 4 and tried to log in with my username and password. It won't connect, so I entered the proxy settings from my internet filter. When I try to sign in windows shuts down Logos 4. Does anyone know how to help? I'm using Vista.

I have no such problems with Vista (nor Win7), using Windows built-in firewall.

Which firewall are you using, perhaps someone with that program can offer some suggestions.

On the other hand, if you have a firewall at the router, or are connecting through a corporate or institutional network, the problem could be somewhere other than your computer settings.

I'm using American Family Online's filter. When I enter the settings they told me to, windows shuts down my program. I couldn't even download the logos softward off the net. I had to wait for the disks.

This log doesn't tell us anything, since Logos didn't crash. Please enable logging (see link on post above), restart Logos and try to connect. Shut down Logos and post all the logs here before restarting Logos.

When you enter your proxy server, have you entered xenon.afo.net?

If so, try http://xenon.afo.net

Yes, I've tried that and it won't take it. I enter xenon.afo.net:8080 and it closes the program down. 8080 is the port they use.

Hi Drew.

What antivirus software are you running? There is something going around called "Backdoor:Win32/Cycbot.B" that messes with proxy settings. If you're using older antivirus software with outdated definitions you might miss it. I know because I had similar symptoms with weird proxy server action and was running a version of MSFT's "OneCare" that I had no idea had lapsed. I'm now running the latest "Microsoft Security Essentials" stuff (the "OneCare" replacement), which detects it but doesn't fully excise it. Every time I rebooted the machine, it would clean the virus. But it also is set up to re-infect upon restart.

I had to eventually delete some things it added and even hack my registry.

Before I did all that (but after the software 'cleaned' the virus), I found that I could get my web browser functioning by going to Proxy Settings and just making it follow automatic settings. But I had to do that every time I rebooted. So I googled and dug deeper, found this:

Hope it helps. I still haven't figured out where this thing came from, I generally have about 10 sites I visit and can't figure out how this slipped in.

Mark, it worked!! I thought I had tried that before but I think it was erasing my password for logos. I went back and made sure that the password was there and it started downloading my books!

Since everyone on this list is focused on proxy settings I will reiterate a problem which tripped me up last week. I had visited a site which required a proxy setting for web browsing which I included in my Windows Internet Explorer browser. After I left the site with my laptop I reverted to using FireFox which is my normal browser.

Later, I discovered that my Logos 4 would not sync, would not update, and would not even login. Support asked me if I had internet access, which of course, I did using FireFox. I discovered the stale proxy setting only after I attempted to start my Internet Explorer. Thus, Logos 4 users should remember that Logos 4 inherits internet access settings from IE.

Actually, it's the Windows OS that takes its settings from IE, or better stated: the way to change the proxy settings in Windows is to change the settings via IE. Other programs will use Windows settings, unless they are overridden internally in that program.
