Question: How to open a Bible to just start reading?

I fired up Logos 4 last night (latest 4.1 version) and simply wanted to read Ephesians. For the life of me, I couldn't figure out how to do that. I didn't want to type "Eph" into the search field on the home page or start a passage study or exegetical study - I just wanted to read.

I looked through all the menu options, high-level tabs (Home, Library, Search). I tried to find something useful in the Help documentation. I was offline, so I couldn't look here or on the wiki.

How do I do this? And shouldn't something as basic as this be among the most easily discoverable features?

If you know what Bible you want to read (NIV, ESV, NAB, etc.) Just type for example "NIV" in the Command bar, and you will see a command below it like "Open NIV...". Click it to open the Bible. Note you can also click and DRAG that Open command to the toolbar or Favorites, so next time you just click one button to open your favorite Bible. Once it's open, type the verse you want to start reading at, and go!

Check out "Command Box", "Favorites", and "Toolbar" in Help for some good information how to do these things if you are unsure.

Be sure and check out how to add your favorites commands onto the toolbar or favorites list, it's pretty cool.

Your point is shared by many. Logos 4 isn't really that intuitive, especially for someone coming from Logos 3, because it's a different paradigm of sorts. But once you learn how it works I would argue things are actually much easier/quicker than Logos 3. Just gotta get over the learning curve...maybe the cost of becoming easier to use was a penalty of sorts in being intuitive, I don't know...

Open NIV to Ephesians

And it will open the Bible to the correct spot.

If I didn't know any better, I'd of thought Logos had slipped back into the good ole DOS days (with the low contrast color scheme of course). Type this ... type that. But I'd have to admit, once you know something, it's easier to just type it in. I work across 4 different products (need for resources), so intuitiveness is pretty important and DOS commands don't quite work.

Typing commands is optional, but often faster. If you want to just open a Bible you can also open your Library and from there open the Bible you want. This should be the most obvious way to most people.

Well, you don't HAVE to type commands. Click on the Library icon (this is where your books are stored afterall). Scroll to your bible of choice and click it. No typing at all. The typing just makes it quicker once you know how.

i have made shortcuts to my favorite Bible, Commentary, Dictionary in the Shortcut bar. So i can simply click the shortcut and it opens. If i want a different Bible, Commentary, or Dictionary then i click on the Parallel resource button after opening it to change it.

Just type a reference in the command bar and it will jump to it in your preferred Bible. (You can use "Open NIV to Eph", but "Eph 1.1", or even just "Eph" works, too.)

I knew I could open it via the library. That still seems obscure to me (or at least requiring too many steps). You have to sort, filter, or otherwise narrow the list of resources sufficiently to locate the Bible and then proceed to open it.

Maybe Bob and gang will create a module that knows what the user wants by osmosis and creates a layout for just that moment... No work involved at all for the user!
