Upgrades

Hello all

I am a pastor, retired but still activlve with my studies. I find Logos 4 wonderful. I had The early Scolars edition and it was great and Logos 4 is a great improvement. How many of you lost some books with the tranfer to Scolars upgrade. It will cost me $500. to get the new upgrade. Being retired on a pastors check will make it very dificult to get thee upgrade but will trust the Lord for his help. Anyway the program is more than worth the expense and I woould recommend it to anyone who is serious about the study of Gods word espencially Pastors. The possibilities are endless.

Hi Pastor Al. You should never "lose" books when upgrading. If you have, I recommend contacting customer service ASAP! Once you "own" a book in Logos you do not lose it. I lost none during the upgrade.

I am somewhat in agreement with the below quote.

I have used Libronics for years and now since the conversion I wonder if I actually have all the resources I had pre-L4. I have no way of knowing because I cannot compare the two side by side and LOGOS no longer allow you to know what is being downloaded to your system. Somewhat disturbing as I really like to see what I am getting and where it is that I got it, and what file it can be found under.

I have recommended Libronics to many pastors and now am somewhat ambigious due to the massive reconstruction of Libronics to L4 as it is a handful to say the least as far as a learning cure. I am not sure that continuing to refer L4 to pastors and laymen is a good decision. I have had a few pastors look at LOGOS 4 and some downloaded it and now are complaining at to the complexity of it saying it is to difficult to understand and figuring it out is to much of a task. Perhaps L4 needs someway of bringing it into existense to the non-user so that it is more functional and not so intense. Perhaps a "Starter Version" with video's.

I love L4 but also find myself struggling because I cannot make the seminar and also find the teaching videos to be to fast to follow.'

Just my opinion. BUT I will be much slower recommending L4 unless I know the person is academically enhanced and scholarly in their approach.

As others said, you don't lose resources. I had Scholars 3, and I'm quite sure I did not lose anything when I upgraded to version 4. The exception was all the PBBs from stilltruth.com, which are still to come in Logos 4.

What I think Logos has tried to do in version 4 is to design an interface that's simple to get started with, but has enormous grunt hidden under the surface to keep the advanced users happy. This is the kind of thing Microsoft has done in Word: you open it and just start typing, and later you discover features such as merging, footnote styles and so on. The unfortunate thing with this approach is that IMHO it makes it harder to find where they hid that feature. Things are not all obviously accessible anywhere, so you try right-clicking the text, the button at the top left of the resource, the tab itself, and so on. In some cases, I still don't know how to get at some things (e.g. to delete a Notes file.) I'm sure it's all there somewhere, but there's no systematic structure to finding where stuff is hidden in the interface. Unlike Word where there are multiple ways to access the same thing (e.g. copy-to-clipboard can be accessed through keyboard shortcut, menu, or toolbar/ribbon), things are not easily discoverable in Logos 4, and hence it takes lots of searching and learning to find your way.

Despite the learning difficulty, it's still one of the best library resource management and searching programs I've ever used, and the range of resources offered for our study is unparalleled.

This issue was debated a lot when we came out of the Logos 4 Beta Progam and everyone tried to reconcile the number of resources in Logos 4 with the number that they had in Logos 3. This was complicated by a number of factors but I tracked mine through and am 100% sure that I lost nothing. I know that a number of others checked at the time and were equally sure that nothing was lost.

Just to put some numbers around this, on the day I officially switched from Logos 3 I owned 2,256 resources or at least that is what my Bibliography told me.

The upgrade to the new Logos 4 included 177 additional resources so I was confused that the total only went up to 2,408 and I initially thought that I had lost 25 resources. Because I had both my Logos 3 and Logos 4 resource directories I was able to check what the missing files were.

22 missing files were the Logos 3 help files which showed up as resources in my Logos 3 Bibliography.

3 missing files were the standalone interlinear Bibles that were superseded by the new integral ones so not lost just relocated...

For completeness I will mention that 3 more resources went 'missing' in January when the Lexham Resources were rationalised.

Having tracked this carefully I am convinced that as long as your licenses have been properly maintained no resources will be lost when you migrate from Logos 3 to 4.
