Logos has "light" tagged as H3992 (a verb) but no modern version reflects this in English. Darby's translation does reflect a verb. Darby used "enlighteneth." The Tanakh has "what brightens the eye." And a note for this verse in The Expositor’s Bible Commentary has a note reading, "The LXX has 'the eye that sees …" It seems to me that the "light of the eyes" goes back to Wycliffe where he had "The liȝt of eȝen maketh glad the soule."
Frankly, when someone shows or tells me something that I did not know, it can have the effect of making me happy. But "bright eyes" (HCSB, NASB95, Legacy), "bright look" (NET), "cheerful look" (NIV84, NLT), "a cheerful glance" (NAB), "clearness of eyes" (Coverdale), none of these have a verbal sense to them. Did Logos get the tagging wrong? And did Darby, the Tanakh and the LXX get it right with everyone else getting it wrong?
It kind of reminds me of the mother who was watching her son march in the band. He was out of step, but she insisted that he was the only one who was right. Technically it could be possible that he was in step with the drum and everyone else was off. But highly unlikely. Help!
