How does Logos 4 decide what resources to use?

If you do a search on a bible passage one of the sections created is Handout. How does Logos 4 decide what resources to use to accomplish creating a handout? Can these be controlled?

I'm getting more and more frustrated trying to understand how a simple Bible verse search is accomplished.

I watch the videos and they show me screens or things in fields I don't have. For instance the library window when you click prioritize. I only have Bibles listed, no commentaries, no dictionaries as shown in video. And I' suspose to figure out how to use the product.

I was fairly comfortable with Logos 3 but Logos 4 is killing me. I feel so helpless. I do things and things happen but there doesn't seem to be any ryhme or reason.

I appreciate all the help, but so far I haven't found anything anywhere that tells me how Logos 4 decides what resources it uses to accomplish such things as creating a "handout".

I do a passage search for John 3:16 and a handout is created. How did Logos decide which resources to include in this handout and which to ignore? Can anyone tell me?

I get a list of commentaries that referrence John 3:16 but I have no idea how Logos decided to choose which one first.

I really like Logos 4 and the results I get from it but it is sort of like Windows it does things that it thinks I want and I'm never asked what I want, how I want it, when I want it, or where it is going to look to provide what it does.

I'm really on the fence with Logos 4. I don't know whether to invest more time, money and energy into it or to step away and say that was interesting.

There seems to be a zillion things you can do to control Logos 4 but they are hidden or scattered all through the product and there isn't a road map that tells me how to get from here to there.

You're supposed to add your own favourite commentaries/dictionaries/etc. The feature video called "Prioritized
Resources" explains how that works. Prioritisation is very important as it's that list which Logos uses in very many places (probably including handouts) to decide which resources to use first.

If you're struggling with Logos 4, you probably ought to work through at least the feature videos one by one. When you've done so, and you're more familiar with the software, you can choose the tutorial videos about specific features.

the Handout feature is slated to be redesigned. So i have not added a wiki page for this feature.

I'm a Nelson E bible user and I got the free logos 4 download. I'm trying to evaluate Logos 4 to decide if I want to move from Wordsearch (which I love) to Logos 4. My biggest problem/complaint is Logos 4 does all kinds of magical things but I find myself more the bemused spectator rather than a participant. This is because nowhere can I find what the expected results are of each basic function and how these results can be manipulated.

That will be confusing - there'll be many resources featured in tutorials and videos that you simply don't have because you haven't paid for them (like the maps, for example). It won't be fair to Logos to evaluate on what you can currently see.

You could purchase Logos, then ask for a refund if it doesn't meet your expectations. Alternatively, if there's something specific you want to 'see' working, we could probably dig up a video showing you what it would look like if you had a paid-for version of Logos 4.

I agree with you to some extent but the fact that no one has been able to tell me the answer to my question makes me think no one is really sure. The fact that I'm using the downloaded Logos 4 and E Bible resources aside I would think there should be something, somewhere that tells me Logos 4 by default uses these resources to assemble a handout and you can or can not modify these resources. If they can be modified then there should be something somewhere that tells me and you how.

Perhaps this isn't very kind but for many instead of being users of Logos 4 I see many as spectators that watch what Logos 4 does when they do thus and such. I don't find that position very comforting but one that is expected and common for new products, however most new products produce a guide somewhere listing each user option/command/modification along with expected results. I have yet to see anything like that for Logos 4.

The honest answer is "I don't know". Personally I don't need handouts, so don't use them. I suspect that the components of a handout come from an excerpts file which has created by Logos editors. Logos appears to finds excerpts from resources I own that are relevant to the passage/topic.

When I run a handout, I'll get a list of 25 possible excerpts for inclusion, and I can then choose 5-6 to actually place in the handout. The excerpts come mainly from Biblical Places/People/Things (includings maps and pictures), some of the common dictionaries and commentary sets (those included in base packages, I think), Logos Infographics and Hymns, and a Word Puzzle.

I can also add blank items, allowing me to enter free-form text.

I can also add excerpts from any other passage or topic by clicking on "Add Item". This opens up the possibility of thousands of images and maps (depending on what you have in your library). This won't allow you to add items that aren't in the excerpts file, however.

I don't want to debate this issue I'm looking for answers and I sure don't want to offend you or anyone else. However if a person can't control the end result because 'they aren't given an option to' or "don't know how to' they are by my understanding of the definition spectators of the results.

Again I don't want to debate definitions or insult anyone I'm simply faced with a decision whether to invest time, energy, and resources into Logos or not.

For me to feel comfortable I would like to understand what results to expect when I do certain things. I can't seem to find anyone or any one place that gives me those answers.

I'm presently on a PC that is going bad quickly and I need to purchase a new computer. I'm leaning toward a Mac and Logos seems to have the strongest product for Mac. I have been exercising Logos 4 trying to find a comfort level I can live with and I keep coming back to things don't work as I expect and I can't find how logos is doing things that effect that. If I fail to reach a comfort level I can live with in Logos I will take the safe course of action, which is to replace my PC with another and stick with Wordsearch. Just saying that frustrates me though.

I'm going to assume here you're talking about the Passage Guide. The handout section is created from excerpts from several different common resources: Biblical Places/People/Things (includings
maps and pictures), some of the common dictionaries and commentary sets
(those included in base packages), Logos Infographics and
Hymns, and a Word Puzzle. A default handout is created, but you can click edit and move the sections around, or add new sections. The selection criteria for what Logos chooses to include by default is complex, depending on what Places/People/Things/Pictures/Hymns are relevant to your passage, but it seems that Logos tries to pick the most relevant item of each type for inclusion.

I'm not sure whether you're referring to the "type a passage and click go" section of the Home Page, or the actually search facility. Can you clarify? What are you trying to achieve?

That will be inevitable if you haven't paid for Logos 4! But as the prioritisation video shows, your library will have commentaries and dictionaries in, and you are supposed to drag these over into the prioritise column.

The ability to search Greek and Hebrew using Reverse Interlinears? The text of the hundreds of of commentaries available? Accuracy of information in all the academic journals? How Logos discovers what commentaries have information on a scripture you are interested in? How the Word Ring is created in the Bible Word Study report? The way items are linked to the Cited By panel? Exactly what the mechanics are that allow you to create sentence diagrams? How they programmed the Exegetical Report to break down the definitions a word at a time? The magic behind the analysis view of your Bible Searches?

Logos has so much that it does and handouts are inconsequential to its core functionality I hope you will not make that item the one you use to finally choose for or against Logos.

I have played around with it and found the learning curve to be high and the information about it low. It is more or less try this option see what happens then try this option and see what happens. Once you enter edit and start changing the option gvien in the lower right things start getting werid real quick. I did the same thing with the home page options on Home page customization. It just seems to me that there has to be a better way..

As to me using the non paid Logos, you are probably right there are things that I don't have. but in the prioritize list I can't get past concept that there should be a section for bibles, then commentaries, then dictionaries. I'm still playing around with this but others have suggestted I just need to move my various Bibles commentaries, dictionaries over and the first dictionary will be my main dictionary.

As to searches if I do a passage search and my prioritized commentary doesn't have a commentary on that passage does logos automatically switch to my second commentary when it opens the commentary section center column bottom box?

Is there an easy way to quickly open Logos 4 to a do a concordance look up. Someone comes to you and says where it say, "be holy" is there a really fast way to get into logos 4 and find that passage? Right now if I don't have Logos 4 started it takes 5 times longer to get it to where I can do the search than it takes the search to accomplish.

Is there a way I can create a passage list either just references or reference and complete verse for something on a topic? Example I want to be able to have a list of references on "parental love". I don't need info, I don't need parallel comparisons, I don't need commentary, I don't need a word study. I just need every instance where the Bible talks about parental love. How fast can I get that answer if I don't have logos 4 up and running?

I guess these are the kinds of things I'm dealing with.

I don't not trust the information. I just can find a consistency all the time. It seems like one time I do this and that happens and another time I do this and something else happens. Handouts are a good example. If you change the layout lower left it seems that the options on the lower right take on whole new meanings. There are so many combinations I have yet to figure them all out. It would be nice to have something somewhere that tells me what layout and option does and how effect each other.

It is funny if I want to get into deep study in Logos 4 it seems I can do that fairly easy. But if I'm sitting at my desk and someone walks up and says hey where does it say thus and such in the Bible and Logos isn't up and running I'm better off using another product than trying to startup logos wait for it to do whatever it does and then try to decide how I want to search for an answer. I gave the example above someone walks up to you and says where does it say "Be Holy" in scripture. What is a really fast way to start up logos and find that?

Again I'm not questioning the accuracy of Logos 4 or the results it produces I'm questioning how does it work with my resources so I am fairly confident I can say yes or no that question isn't in that commentary? Example I have two commentaries in my priority list, I do a search on a passage my first prioritized commentary doesn't address, when Logos opens the commentary box from the passage guide (lower center column) will my first commentary always be opened to the nearest passage or will logos go to my second commentary that does reference the passage? I think I have seen both ways occur.

I guess my problem is all the videos show how to do certain things but none go through and say when you do this, this is what will happen and when you do that, this is will happen. And I can't find any documentation that says if your top prioritized resource doesn't address your search criteria then Logo will/won't shift to the next resource in the priior list for output.

I hope I'm explaining my frustrations in an understandable way.

OY! I'm afraid you've started/majored on one of the (IMHO) Most frustrating aspects of Logos 4=Handouts. Everyone who knows me and my record here will concur that I've been beating up on them since before Logos 4 was released.

The good news is that Handouts are due for a rewrite. (See: http://community.logos.com/forums/p/19163/144771.aspx#144771 and http://community.logos.com/forums/p/11635/92291.aspx#92291 )

Yes. I just tested it by running a report on Exodus 4:1 (random) and since NIC doesn't have Exodus, L4 skipped the first priority NIC and loaded my second priority WBC on Exodus in the said box.

I don't think so. AFAIK the program has to load in order to run a search.

OTOH you could create a link shortcut that would load a search and run the query. It would look like: logos4:Search;kind=Bible;q=$22be_holy$22

If you click on that with L4 closed, it will open and you'll get a bible search on "be holy" It still takes the start up time but launches the search immediately.

For me the time isn't an issue because L4 is literally always (ok, almost always) running from the moment I log in till I turn off my computer a week later.

Logos has passage lists under FILE>PASSAGE LIST. Once you've built them you should be able to access them in the time it takes you to load L4 and open the PL.

Handouts are a good example.

They may be a good example of the engine being hidden under the hood, but I don't think are a good example of Logos 4 as a whole, nor what it was meant to do. They may be frustrating but probably are best ignored. I think of them as poorly designed and unreliable in what you can see. I don't use them, but am the kind of person who wants to select stuff on my own so its no big deal to me.

I think that is the point of Logos 4. You don't really have to understand what's under the hood to get a passage study underway. Yet it does have many tools that can take you much deeper. Logos does take a while to learn and there is some customization that will help improve your use of Logos 4 (Prioritization and Collections, for example).

One solution that I use is to keep Logos running on my computer but minimized. You may not be able to do that so you have to deal with Logos's start-up time.

To get answers to the Be holy question, open up search and type "Be holy" with the quotes in Bible Search, select the range of passages you want and the Bible you want and you'll have your answer in no time. (On my computer that takes about 30 seconds from opening the Search tool to getting the full answer.)

I think I have seen both ways occur.

If a passage is not specifically referenced in your commentary Logos will not go to the next closest one. I think that's how most of us would want it to work. If a commentary covers a range of scripture references (say Romans 6:1-13) as a single section of commentary, but doesn't cover Romans 6:6 specifically, a PG run on Romans 6:6 will give you a hit because it will find a reference to that range in that commentary. Some commentaries are set up verse by verse and others with ranges of verses. One volume commentaries tend to be the most 'vague' about this and that is probably what you are working with.

And I can't find any documentation that says if your top prioritized resource doesn't address your search criteria then Logo will/won't shift to the next resource in the priior list for output.

Perhaps you can't find this put unless you restrict your Passage Guide to a specific collection of commentaries, the default is all commentaries with prioritized ones first. Same for results from Bible Dictionaries in a Bible Word Study. Searches are specific to the resource or group of resources you specify. They don't go beyond your imposed limits.

Logos takes some time to get to know. Your questions may be different than others, but all of us have had to deal with some frustration in learning this new tool. Help files and documentation have never been Logos' strong point, but that is often true of much better known software as well. (Try to learn Photoshop on your own!)

With good resources (which you really don't have many of right now) Logos is a great Bible study tool. I don't think you can fully see that with the set of resources you now have. If you purchase a Logos Library you will be able to see more of what Logos can do for your study of God's Word.

Actually it's quite the opposite. There learning curve is very slight, because the feature is very simple! You're probably looking for features that aren't there. As others have mentioned, handouts are not Logos' best feature (though I don't think any of the competitors have anything similar).

Again, if you haven't paid for Logos, lots of items that might appear on the home page, you won't own. Actually home page customisation is very simple. You choose which features you do/don't want to be displayed. It's that simple.

You're free to add in what you want into the prioritisation section. Many users add it bibles, then commentaries, then dictionaries, so the advice you've received is sound. But, to be frank, if I owned some software I didn't understand fully, I wouldn't start by making customisation changes. I'd start by using the software. Once I'd understood the software, I'd be better informed to make the appropriate changes. You might find it better to leave the customisations for now, and concentrate on using the software for your Bible studies.

Yes. Logos will hunt through all your commentaries in order of prioritisation until it finds one with the passage.

Yes, although you're actually asking for something relatively difficult (you're looking at a concept or topic, rather than a simple search. Moreover, it's not a common Bible topic). To do this, you need to open a resource (i.e. a book) that provides topics. Here's how:

(a) Load Logos, (b) press the library button, (c) type topical in the filter box to show which topical resources you have, (d) click on the one you learn to trust, (e) type love or parent in the reference box, and see if you can find something relevant. Not all topical resources may have sufficient topics to list something on parental love.*

*Note, there is a better way to achieve this, which you'll learn after you've been using Logos a little while. You could create a collection of topical resources, then search them for (parent, mother, father) NEAR love. Of course to do this you'll need to better understand both collections and searching. If you're comfortable with the easier method, use it for now, and build up your knowledge and skills slowly.

In windows you can right click the desktop and choose NEW>SHORTCUT

Type (or paste) the substance of that link into it and you're good to go.

OR ELSE

you could just remember the basic format for the command is

logos4:search;kind=Bible;q=

Then just add your keyword to the end of the search when you type it in the RUN dialog.

I'm trying to learn this stuff as fast as I can and there is SOOOOOO much to learn.

As Rosie P. once stated, Learning Logos is a process. Just keep going. If we hadn't been doing this for over a year, including the private beta - we wouldn't know what we were doing either. :-)
