Logos AI is not even in the ballpark of secular AI

I had listened to a sermon by Warren Wiersbe in my car. I like a sentence he said. I noted it down. Came home and entered the following in Logos search:

Warren Wiersbe says "god has his eye on the clock and the thermostat" Get me the quote

Absolute junk came up. Warren Wiersbe's BE Commentary was not even in the list. Frustrated.

Then went to ChatGPT and put the exact same thing. It pulled up the quote.

It then asked whether it should pull up the BE Series. I say "yes" and it pulled up the OT commentary.

It then asked whether it should pull up the exact book. I say "yes" and it gave me Job 23:10. Perfect.

Please don't tell me that Logos AI is not a chatbot and therefore it cannot do what I ask it to do. I don't care what Logos AI is or is not. I want solutions. Why pay subscription when I can get the same service for free minus frustrations?

@1Cor10 31 this is interesting too - I took your quote, and got some references to the statement but nothing by Wiersbe - which the original request didn't mention. So I added on, "No I would like the book where Wiersbe wrote it not where others referenced it" - and it found Wiersbe wrote that exact stamens in “Prayer, Praise & Promises: A Daily Walk through the Psalms”. He did not reference any other books (more on that below).

So then in a new SA topic, I asked ""God has his eye on the clock and the thermostat" was written by Warren Wiersbe. Give me the book(s) where he wrote it, not others who referenced his quote." He did not find even that one Wiersbe source! He did say at the end, "Would you like me to search your entire library instead?" I said yes. So then he said:

"I apologize, but after carefully searching through the provided sources, I could not find the specific quote “God has his eye on the clock and the thermostat” attributed to Warren Wiersbe. "

Very strange - so 1 attempt, he found 1 Wiersbe source. A second attempt, he found none. And this is the kicker imho - I have 143 Wiersbe resource in my library, 31 are type Commentary. I just did a precise search on "hand on the thermostat", and I found 4-5 commentaries, plus other books (devotionals etc.) where Wiersbe penned your exact quote! He wrote it in a number of resources, not just one!

So looking t this deeper - it appears the AI may not be able to discern what the statement completely means that you ask. In the books, sometimes he says "He keep…", sometimes "Creator…", etc. He also does not say "God has his eye on…" per your request, he says "..keeps his eye on". There may be other differences. But that would be disappointing if the quote has to be perfect to find a hit - then the minor variations won't be found either.

Last test - I asked "Show me the books where Warren Wiersbe writes “hand on the thermostat”, not where others reference that statement" - he did find Bible Exposition Commentary by Wiersbe, but I could not get him to return more than 2 results. I am not sure why but that's disappointing too.

I don't have the old testament BE, but did you check to make sure the quote is actually there? Because I do have the NT BE, and the quote appears in 1 Peter 1:6-7, which Logos found no problem on my first search using your wording:

"Trials are controlled by God. They do not last forever; they are “for a season.” When God permits His children to go through the furnace, He keeps His eye on the clock and His hand on the thermostat. If we rebel, He may have to reset the clock; but if we submit, He will not permit us to suffer one minute too long. The important thing is that we learn the lesson He wants to teach us and that we bring glory to Him alone.

For me, the benefit of Logos is that I don't have to trust anything it tells me, I can quickly check the book myself. You may be happy with how quickly and confidently ChatGPT gave you the answer, but are you sure it's the right answer?

I searched for the correct quote "He keeps His eye on the clock and His hand on the thermostat" and got several hits in both precise and smart searches. Even just "hand on the thermostat' gave me the same hits.

When I searched for God has his eye on the clock and the thermostat with no quotes, the first hit was Be Patient by Wiersbe. Not sure why you never got hits.

@Don Awalt . I have the BE commentary Series and a few other resources by Wiersbe. But whether I have it or not is not relevant for search, isn't it? My understanding is that the AI search searches over the entire catalog. But Logos returned nothing!

@Patrick and @Roger Pitot: The fact that you get hits and I don't should be troubling you and not reassuring you (if I may infer that from the tone of your response). The reason is that the next time, the roles could be reversed. Next time around, I could be getting the hits and you may strike out. And

please @Roger Pitot, I shouldn't be expected to put the exact quote in order to get the hit. If so, you have low expectations and I would love to have you as your financial advisor!! I can promise you 2% return on your investment and you'll be happy, it seems (when I could take your money and invest in Government bonds and earn 4%, but pass along only 2% to you!)

The question is: why do 2 people who use the same search get different results if Logos is searching over the entire catalog, as they claim?

Searching for the source of a direct quote is not a task for which the current LLM-AI is well suited. It is a task for which the fuzzy search is better suited. That is not to say that it will never find a direct quote, merely that it will not reliably find a direct quote. Just as it took time to learn when to google something vs. when to use Logos search, it is going to take us time to learn when to use a commercial chatbot vs. when to use Logos. This is made all the more lengthy by the speed by which the chatbots are changing and the fact that Logos changes their vendors behind the scene (as they should).

Can you paste a screenshot so we can see what's happening? I tried to do what you described and it cited three works (one from my library, two outside it) that contained the quote.

This makes some sense to me - when I was doing other searches on this, this morning, other authors have used this quote. So I presume if you just ask for the quote, it may not be Wiersbe.

You need to be flexible with your query. My Smart Books query was:
Where does Warren Wiersbe say that god has his eye on the clock and the thermostat
I got Be Patient and David Jeremiah quoting Wiersbe on 1 Peter —> "He keeps His eye on the clock and His hand on the thermostat".
With the quotes implying an exact match i got nothing on an ALL Search

Study Assistant "All books" was far better with the quotes, but I don't know what was stated in the locked books.
Are you sure you correctly noted the quote from the sermon?

Maybe you were speaking very loosely, and really meant what subsequent posters supposed, "Came home and entered the following in Study Assistant:" Multiple other posters above put their search terms NOT in a "Logos search," but in the new "Study Assistant," and that may account for your very different results.
