My actions:
I'm trying to repro this, but I don't understand the issue.
Assign contents of 2 folders to other folders which made the 2 original drop out of folder list.
As expected, right?
Note that the task bar has blank space rather than contracting. Wish there were a > icon to minimize shortcuts
I don't understand this part. Wouldn't minimizing the shortcuts result in more blank space? Or are you asking to contract/minimize the blank space, and… what? Shorten the window height? Fill that space with something (what?) else?
Switch to Dashboard, expand/contract taskbar … neither gets it to recover unused space.
I don't understand this either. In what sense is unused space "recovered"?
Freezes without error message. Force close.
Is this the real issue? Does it continue to freeze in subsequent sessions?

but I don't understand the issue.
I want to get the entire taskbar to show without the overflow section at the end. This would happen if the shortcut bar was the required length rather than the original length.
If I decrease the height of the window, the shortcut bar contracts. That is what I want when the number of items to display changes.
