Products page - Incorrect counts for Resource Types (???)

Go to the products main page (http://www.logos.com/products). The second category of product grouping is "Resource Type". I tend to look for products (and at my library within L4) that way.

It seems to me that the counts for the number of products within a particular resource type are wrong. A couple of examples. It says, "Lexicons (12)". I have more than that many lexicons in my library, and I don't see them if I click "Lexicons" to just view them. It says, "Monographs (112)". Again, I have more than that in my library.

Note that I've tested this while not logged in to the site, and the counts are the same. So it's not filtering out the products I already own.

If I understand the information they're trying to provide in their guided search for Products, this seems to be a major problem.

I've been progressively working on re-categorizing every single product and product page that Logos.com has -- roughly 4500. Until recently, not all products were categorized for product type or resource type. I'm slowly moving through each page, but it takes a while. I've been at it for just over a month. As I continue through, those numbers will become more and more accurate. It just takes time. I'm *hoping* to have everything done by the end of November.

I appreciate the explanation. A couple of follow-up questions:

1) Does this kind of problem affect any of the other guided search categories (e.g. "Topic")?

2) What's my workaround until you finish this recategorization? Do I just have to get lucky stumbling across a desired commentary or lexicon when I'm looking browsing through all products?

Yes and no. Resource type, with the exception of commentaries and commentary sets, rarely got used at all, so the majority of the time I'm adding product types where there was none in the past. For topics though, on the old site these were applied to books by whoever wrote the page and there was never any system for categories or set method for what kinds of books go with a give category. The result was that many books do have topics already, but they're not necessarily as consistent as they could be. So you should still be able to more stuff through Topics than through resource types.

Before I began re-categorizing books, I completely revamped the Topics section, giving it far more structure and organization. So again, Topics will become progressively more and more reliable as well as time goes by.

Like on the old site, searching for still is your best bet. The good news is that what you currently see in terms of categorization is already superior to what was previously available and it will only get better. I've categorized roughly 15% of our pages thus far and as I've done more I'm getting progressively faster at it. And once this project is done, the application of categories to new books will be done far more consistently and systematically than before.

Also, "in the meantime" is a progressive as there's going to be more and more improvement and reliability every single week.

Thanks again for the reply. Another question: When you're finished, will the Resource Type categories on the web match those if I sort my library in L4 by "Type"? I would expect that they would be an exact match. In other words, if I owned every single resource Logos sells and went into my library and sorted by "Type", the distinct set of Types I see there should be the same set of Resource Types I see on the web site, with the same resources belonging to a Type / Resource Type in each location. And by way of comment, if that is how it's going to end up, I'd think the categorizing you're doing could be automated since all the data already exists as metadata on each resource.

We're aiming for some finer grain distinctions than what you see in the metadata. For example, currently, Festschrifts (collected essays published in honor of another scholar) don't appear as a category in the metadata, but its helpful information to have while browsing or searching on Logos.com

The long term goal is going to be parity, but at this point, its not possible to automate it and still have all the information that we want to provide users of the website. If we waited until all the metadata in Logos 1) was accurate and 2) could make the finer grain distinctions in products that we want to make, there is no way that users would be able to benefit from automation for quite some time. For the approach that we're taking, we can have helpful resource categorization easily by the end of the year and hopefully by the end of this month.
