Brazos Theological Commentary - Recommendations

I keep seeing this commentary show up occasionally is sale. I already have a good collection of commentaries. So, I'm not sure what this set would add. Any feedback on what you like or dislike about it would be appreciated.

I'll toss in my two cents.

The title accurately describes the focus. It seems that the contributors are not always scholars whose specialization is in the NT or OT, but ones who are stronger in the world of theology. But from what I can see in the few volumes I spot checked, their handling is solid.

The scholars represent a variety of traditions with several English-speaking countries represented. In spite of that, there's not much racial or gender diversity, and I can't see much representation from Asia, Africa, South America, or continental Europe.

Checking my reading log, I see that I read the Kings volume (cover to cover) about 5 years ago and did not like it. I noted, "Little exposition of the text, too much parallelomania, too agenda-driven, and little memorable." 😐️

You had me chuckling at myself. Parallelomania? There is no such thing in theology especially if at every church service you are comparing 3 or 4 biblical texts. I find the Logos focus on a single passage as its biggest weakness. I plead guilty of parallelomania especially in theology.

In Tremper Longman's Old Testament Commentary Survey he writes concerning Brazos' 1 Samuel contribution:

"All I can say is that I don’t know what Murphy is talking about, but it’s not the text of 1 Samuel. I can’t recommend this commentary for anyone. No stars."

This is the only book in his entire survey to receive such a low score.

Thanks for the feedback. I didn't realize it, but I have 2 of the volumes (Acts and Ezra & Nehemiah). It looks like they were part of the Free Book of the Month. I can check them out and see what they're like.
