This morning I began preparation for a new small group study on the Sermon on the Mount. My first step as always with Logos was to sort through my resources. My goal was to find Commentaries and especially Bible Studies specific to this topic I already have in my library.
I started in Factbook and chose the event Sermon on the Mount. I intentionally chose the event as opposed to the Bible reference as I was hoping to have books specific to the Sermon on the Mount at least listed first rather than every commentary on Matthew I own. Nope. I then looked through all the Factbook tabs to see if Bible Studies generally or Bible Studies on the Sermon on the Mount specifically were listed. I did not see this as an option anywhere. Did I miss something? A Teaching tab specific to Bible Studies (and maybe Monographs) would be a good addition to Factbook for lay leaders like myself.
My next stop was the Library window. First I filtered by Factbook->Other->Sermon on the Mount and 23 resources were listed including some Commentaries and Bible Study resources. Getting somewhere! Second I filtered by Subject->Sermon on the Mount and 36 resources were listed. The majority of both lists were the same but both had resources not listed on the other. Why were the lists different? What is the criteria for a resource to be in each of these filters?
My final stop was to create a new Bible Study document. I added a Bible reference to the entire Sermon on the Mount (Factbook topic was not an option) and had a very, very long list of resources presented from which I can pull questions. This list did not highlight books specific to the Sermon on the Mount and looked completely different at least in terms of sorting from the lists from earlier.
I was not necessarily surprised by all of this as I have been using Logos for some time but I was expecting it to be easier to get to especially Bible Studies on the topic without wading through everything related to all of Matthew. Seems like a pretty basic use case for a lay leader.
