Viewing Syriac characters properly in my personal books

When I download a pdf and it contains Syriac characters like Estrangelo, the characters are completely garbled after I convert the pdf into docx. format. I have installed at least 4 different types of fonts, but none of them work. I'm sure it's a simple fix, but don't know what it is. The pdf's are from Academia.edu.

I have had this problem with Malayalam when the PDF had embedded the script in the PDF rather than relying on the system fonts. I tracked the problem to the conversion process not handling the scripts properly but did not find the solution before other matters took priority.

Thanks M.J., I suspected something along those lines, but wasn’t sure. Hebrew and Aramaic carry over just fine, but not Syriac.
