I've set up a default layout I use for Bible Study (named it and saved it), and I'm wondering if there is a way for the passage guide to default to this layout when i use it.
John there is no link between the Passage Guide and the layout it is used in, so no, you can't specify a layout to be used with the Passage Guide.
No. Tools and Guides (eg. Passage Guide) will only open in the current layout or a floating window. So customise a Guide and save that as part of the Bible Study layout.
BTW: John why not call this layout Passage Guide and save it? Include your custom passage guide in the layout somewhere. Every time you open the 'Passage Guide' layout your custom passage guide will be there.

I took your question differently than the other respondents. So just in case I understood correctly...
I didn't want all the default sections in the Passage Guide that show up there by default, for example Music and Media Resources. To change what happens there, click the button/icon at the upper left of the passage guide. That will show up menu with items like font size, link sets, etc. Pick Edit Guide Template. That brings up a screen where you can pick which sections are included, change their order (drag and drop), etc. You'll note that it's named this guide template "Copy of Passage Guide" - you can change that name (I used "My Passage Guide").
At that point, you can open that passage guide under "Guides" on the main menu area. It also seems that if you start a study by entering a reference from the "Home" page, it will use that new passage guide template instead of the default passage guide template. I'm not sure how it decides to do that or if there's a way to explicitly configure which passage guide template is used when a study is initiated from the Home page.

As I understand it, if you call your PG 'My Passage Guide' it takes precedence over the default PG; if you call you PG something else, you will have to choose it from the menu.
