help with search parameters

I want to find Logos resources that deal with Jesus' seven "I Am" statements in John's gospel. How might I go about searching this?

Try searching your entire library with the following:

Jesus NEAR "seven I am"

If you want it broader try searching Jesus AND "seven I am"

A different starting point is to do a Bible Search in John's gospel for "I am" and look at why some of the sayings of Jesus aren't included in the seven.

I appreciate it's not what you were asking for but it might throw a different light on it.

It may help also to consider the types of resources you might be interested in.  (sys theo, commentary, monograph, etc) and to limit your searches to created collections of such resources.

Another strategy is to use the "Cited by" tool. Go to the first instance of the I am statements of Jesus (John 6:35), and initiate the tool. What you'll see there depends on what collections you've set up, plus some built-in defaults. Every reference to these 7 will start with this one, plus, using the cited by tool will sort your results by type and/or collection giving you a bit more insight into what you're looking at.

Note that all the categories are collapsible, so if there are categories you don't want to look at, collapse them. What I do is collapse all of them and open one at a time.

The following search strings might be helpful to you:

"I am the" NEAR Jesus

("I am" NEAR Jesus) AND ("I am" NEAR John)  Note: this is one search string.

Neither of these is perfect and you will probably get more hits than you want to deal with.I'd definitely use these on collections not my whole library if I had a large library.

I would probably approach this as Richard suggests, but you will get a bunch of 'extras' through that means as well.

If you want to search just for the I AM statements themselves, rather than resources that refer to them you could search only the words of Christ. Several English Bibles allow this.

Yes Mark, but the "I Am" statements are best searched in Greek, since they are identified by the emphatic 1st person singular: "ἐγώ εἰμι" A phrase search in Greek is the best way to find these. It is interesting to compare the 7 "ἐγώ εἰμι" passages of Jesus in John with others not considered among the 7 (and with other usage throughout the NT and the LXX) , though that may be beyond the scope of the OP's interest.
