Hey Josh I was going to add that I did the very same thing. My predicament was a conglomeration of things
I bought Platinum because:
- I couldn't afford Portfolio even if strung out for 12 months (Even to upgrade to Portfolio from Platinum would cost more than rebuying Platinum)
- I didn't then want to wait a year to gain access to some of the Portfolio only works (Near East Archaeology Collection, Biographical Dictionary of Evangelicals, Critical Review of Books in Religion, 1988–1998, Dictionary of Deities and Demons in the Bible, ISBE, HALOT, & Liddell and Scott Greek–English Lexicon)
- Platinum seems to be the best stopping off point simply for the addition of the BENTC and Pillar Commentary sets

I don't own a package, though I've been a Logos user since 2003.
Started with the Anchor Bible Dictionary, and have built my collection slowly and piecemeal. I have that, the BAR/BR/BibArch archives, WBC, JPS Torah commentary, Oxford and Harper's commentaries (one-volume each)SESB, Targums, Context of Scripture, ANET, Semitic Inscriptions, Ugaritic texts, Semeia, the IVP OT dictionaries, a bunch of individual books that aren't in packages anyways, basically.

I have Platinum.
I don't see me ever upgrading to Portfolio.
I might be interested in a step up from Platinum, if it were developed.

I own Portfolio, with lots of add-ons. I've probably gotten more use out of the add-on collections than what's in my base package, but of course I rely on it for a lot of things.

As far as I know I will never be able to afford Portfolio, although it would be nice, but I've already spent over $6600.00 on Gold + a bunch of add-ons. I would like to upgrade to Platinum at least but I got to looking at it and found something to be rather irritating, not that I want to complain but I just can't help mentioning this at least. Right now at the current package discount rates, the difference in price between Gold and Platinum is $248.00. Now I want to upgrade and I already own a few things that are in Platinum and a few hundred dollars worth at that. I'm not a new customer, I'm a good customer, in fact I'm probably at least above average I would guess as far as what I have spent, there's no way I could calculate that of course. Maybe Logos has a lot of customers who make a really good salary or have a really good source of income, but I will honestly say I am not that fortunate although I wouldn't consider myself to be poor exactly, in fact I went in debt for 2 and half years (I'm not kidding, my employer loaned me the money and I'm working it off a chunk a payday) just to get the library I have because I want so much to learn all I can and I really don't make that much money, $11.50 an hour to be exact. Anyway... I am not looking for pity, that's not my point at all. I'm just trying to establish the point that it is hard for me to buy these books and I can only go so far in debt or I'll just have to wait years for upgrades. So now (using a little wishful thinking) I go to check the upgrade price from Gold to Platinum and it looks like this for me personally:
$279.05 would cost me $31.05 more than the difference between what someone would pay for Gold and for Platinum at the current 20% discount. I don't get an upgrade offer at this rate and I have spent a few hundred on things that are in Platinum. Some things that I have paid for that would be included in the Platinum package are:
Charles Simeon's Horae Homileticae Commentary (21 vols.) $489.95
I paid $29.95 for :"Jesus Christ The Greatest Life" which is now offered as part of every base package
R. A. Torrey Collection (15 vols.) $119.95
A Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament and Other Early Christian Literature, 3rd ed. (BDAG) $150.00
These total up to $789.85 I have others that would be included in Portfolio that would add up to much more than this. But I'm just looking for now at this particular upgrade to Platinum. I have spent all this money so far yet to upgrade I'd have to drop $31.05 more than someone who hasn't already purchased a base package. I feel like I've thrown away a lot of money when I look at all these facts and it just is really rather depressing. It just seems that there could be some better return for people who are spending a fair sum of money beyond what any of the base packages cost to get a little further ahead with their collections. I know I've probably said too much about my personal situation but I just want Logos to understand the perspective of at least one customer. If I have made some error in calculation please feel free to correct me.

I own the Platinum plus many add ons. I am doing work on my DTH degree. I find the Platinum package to be by far the best buy to get a solid overall library at really great price. If you can effectively use Platinum, then you most likely are mature enough to have areas you would really like to study, so rather than spending all the extra money on the Portfolio, which does not have as big of a discount and still only gives you a general library, spend that money on the areas that are interesting to you!
For example I spend my money on Greek and Hebrew helps, commentaries dealing with Greek and Hebrews languages, theology books, books that deal with hermeneutics, bible backgound books, and theological journals.

I got Portfolio Edition a year ago. I have added lots of collections & individual titles to that. Whoever puts together collections at Logos does a great job in my opinion. (I am a little confused with the new Zondervan Commentaries Collection; it looks like a grab bag special. But I have enjoyed Swindoll's books so I may be surprised with his commentaries. We will see.)
Although I get a "better deal" buying collections, I have found the resources I selectively hunt down and pay for individually are the ones I enjoy most. But I will keep buying collections. It's all good. [:P]

I currently own Platinum with additional resources from Logos and Nelson. Like others at the moment Portfolio does not appear to be the most cost effective way of getting what I need so I'm adding the bits ad pieces as I go.

I upgraded to Platinum when L4 came out. What Portfolio offers additonaly in its base package is not worth the cost increase to me. From this point I prefer to add specific resources that I want.

I owned Platinum for a year or so and kept looking at Portfolio. Last week I took the plunge and upgraded. For me the cost was much less than I saw on the upgrade page because, 1) I already owned several expensive collections and 2) I receive an academic discount. It's always worth calling sales and asking them to recheck the upgrade calculator - sometime collections are missed that would lower your price.
Yes, there are lots of resources in it that I won't access much, but I'm really enjoying the upgrade. The College Press commentaries are better than I anticipated! It's nice to have the ISBE in addition the the AYBD I already have.
I'm looking forward to Pannenberg's theologies as well as the wealth of theological material from the set. For me, that's the area of greatest interest and value.

Sam, as someone who earns only 50 cents an hour more than you do at my day job, I know exactly how you feel. Fortunately upgrading to from Gold to Portfolio only cost me $750 due to the fact that I already owned a number of the more expensive resources (I've been a Logos customer for almost 10 years). Randy's advice on that matter is excellent, always get the sales rep to check what you already own. If you already own a number of resources in Platinum, your upgrade should cost less than the price you're looking at online.
Randy, the College Press commentaries are among my favourite. I have them prioritized. They're excellent value, well informed and well balanced.

I have the Portfolio edition and just like Rosie, Jonathan, Matthew, and others, I've a lot of added material prioritized, collected, annotated, and wish I could rent a room at Rosie's place for a week (a month?) to copy her setup and way of organizing. But it's all good!

I have BSL, I hope, someday to be able to upgrade to Scholars, maybe it will be when Logos will upgrade from Logos 4, to Logos 5.0 -
I have the BSL. I find most of the books in the packages "nice to have" but not essential. I got the BSL just to have a base and some of the add-ins. Some of the "more essential" books in the higher base packages (like NA27 etc), I got them as individual books, which is still cheaper. Instead, I get books, commentaries, lexicons, dictionaries, monographs etc which aren't in any of the base packages.

Matthew has my number! I'm not as organized as I might sound. My desk is a mess, I've got piles of stuff all over my floor. I have 9371 email messages in my Inbox. And as for Logos, I'm not quite caught up on tagging my Library. And I definitely don't have my setup completed to a point where it's really usable. Some of my Collections are still in progress, and my Prioritizations and Layouts still need work. It's an ongoing process, though. Maybe by 2012 I'll finally settle down and actually start reading some of my books! [:)]
