FINALLY - figured out my issue with external links on the shortcut bar

For the longest time it's been a mystery to me why everyone seems to be able to create links to external documents and web shortcuts on their shortcut bar, but I could never get it to work for me. Any external link or document I tried dragging to my shortcut bar would never create the link - not from IE, Firefox, or Windows Explorer.

I finally figured it out, and there may be a few of you with the same issue. Months and months ago, I changed the properties on my Logos icon to always run the program with administrator privileges. I did that because without it the new program updates would fail to install (I'm running Win7 64 bit with UAC enabled). Well, that turned out to be the issue. Once I turned that off a moment ago, now I can create external links on my shortcut bar.

EDIT: Does setting your Logos icon so it no longer runs in administrator mode make new program updates fail to install again? It would be nice to know you'd solved the shortcut bar problem without breaking something else.

Dominick, I'll ask you the same question: Does setting your Logos icon so it no longer runs in administrator mode make new program updates fail to install again? Or was there another workaround for that?

From the best I can recall, I must have originally installed Logos 4 in Administrator mode. As a result, there are some elevations of privileges required to do installs for me that cannot be worked around without just doing a "Run as Administrator". Dave Hooton said that is how it worked, I didn't believe him, and I spent several hours trying to make it work - and it won't :-) It goes beyond just file and security privs and settings.

So what I do, is I do just run it normally now. When I see the message that an update is ready to be installed, I just close Logos, and re-run as Admin. After the UAC box gets clicked to proceed, I get a Logos box saying "An update is available, do you want to install it?" I say yes, it i installs, and when it's done I run Logos (in normal mode) and go on my way.

I could fix this by uninstalling Logos and reinstalling it in normal mode, it's just not that big of a problem for me to go deal with. Maybe some day...

I don't believe this would fix the conflict between auto-update and UAC. Your workaround is probably the best way to go about it. Even though the Logos book files are going under your user profile, the application files are still installing to c:\Program Files, which cannot be modified without re-running as admin. You cannot reinstall it in normal mode - it will fail to be able to write to the Program Files path.

So far, running Logos as admin all the time has only caused me this one issue (dragging external links to the shortcut bar). Everything else that I have tried works just fine when running as admin.

I think what needs to happen is that the Logos installer for the updates needs to specifically request an elevation of privileges to cause the UAC prompt to come up, rather than simply failing or forcing us to re-run as admin.

Even though the Logos book files are going under your user profile, the application files are still installing to c:\Program Files, which cannot be modified without re-running as admin.

Logos4 installs to a user profile by default, not c:\Program Files; which would always require elevation to install in Vista/Win 7. Therefore, installing L4 with Admin elevation is not required. If you do it that way, some files will be installed with a privilege not available to a Standard User and you will have to use Admin elevation when updating the software.

Note that every Windows user account (Administrator & Standard User) runs with Standard User credentials by default!
