Logos 4 Word Study Questions

I recently upgraded to L4 from L3. I've been watching video tutorials on it. When they do a word search in the video tutorial, there is a "density graph" that displays a word's occurrence graphically. There is also a "translation" section that displays another graphic of the word's translations.

I don't have either of these features. How do I get them?

I'm using Logos 4.1 SR-4 (4.10.4.6514) with SESB 3.0. My program settings are on default settings.

What base package to you have? The "translation" ring is only available in Original Languages or Scholar's and above, and apparently that is the case with the density graph as well, though it isn't specifically mentioned on the features list in the comparison chart. To get these advanced features, you'd need to upgrade your base package.

If you already have one of those higher level packages try clicking on the Add menu (upper right in your screenshot) and see if the Translation section is there and you can turn it on. But I'm guessing it's not, because you don't even have the density graph showing in the Lemma section.

You could contact Customer Service and see if there's any way they can honor the fact that you had an older version of Scholar's Library already and unlock that feature for you. Or maybe there's a not very expensive way for you to upgrade to the current version of Scholar's Library that they could offer you. They're in the midst of a huge sale (Black Thursday - Cyber Monday) so Sales might be a bit busy right now, but then again, this might be a good time to get an email in to them with a request for a discounted upgrade, which they might honor for you. I'm not sure if it counts for base package upgrades, but it's worth a try.

There is no way to do that from the home page. But if you create a Layout which has your choice of resources in it, arranged the way you like them, with the Bibles and commentaries all set on the same Link Set, then you can type the passage into any of the reference boxes in any of your Bibles and it will be as if you'd typed it in on the home page. All the resources that are indexable by Bible reference will jump in tandem to that reference. In this way, you almost never need to use the Home Page (unless you want to see the daily blog posts and such). I keep mine turned off (checkbox on the Customize menu), so I start up immediately into my preferred Layout. (EDIT: Actually, I start up into the last layout I had open, which may or may not be my preferred layout. There's currently no way to specify a particular layout to start up in, as there was in L3, but it has been requested and I hope to see it in a future release.)

Did you cross-grade, or upgrade for free? The translation rings require reverse-interlinears, which you won't have from the free upgrade. You can crossgrade to bring your 1999 Scholars in-line with a 2010 Scholars (I don't know what the fee will be, but I'll guess a couple of hundred dollars), but you'll get lots of extra resources for that. Or you can do the minimal cross grade for $70 which will give you the reverse interlinears and a few core-essentials to get the best out of L4.

(Do check with CS that a minimal crossgrade would give you what you want before you commit. I'm pretty sure it will, but haven't been able to test that I'm right.)

So if you do not have these Bibles in the old Scholars 3 (you certainly won't have the ESV) the minimal cross-grade is not the way to go.

Like Mark said, you should be thinking of 'catching up' to Logos 4 by upgrading to the new Scholar's library. You will not get much functionality from Logos 4 without doing this. You are about three versions behind (Series X, Logos 3, and now Logos 4) so you will find an upgrade is expensive. If you plan to use Logos 4 very much (and I suspect you would if you had the features working) I'd say upgrade. I would try to go to at least Scholar's Silver for the best bargain.

I did download the L4 shell without any crossover package. I was unaware of such packages until I read this post, actually.

I mostly just use Logos for searches in Greek and Hebrew texts and quick lexical work. When I read a text I prefer to have a book in front of me. I purchased the SESB to get more advanced morphology searches and apparatuses. I'm interested in relatively few of the resources that come with a Scholar's Library update. It's even hard for me to see how I would use the reverse interlinears, although I admit that I'm not very aware of their functions.

If it included more texts in original languages, such as the Dead Sea Scrolls, Targums, the Talmud, Midrash, and other Rabbinical sources, I would be more inclined to upgrade. I have found a resource for non-biblical DSS, and also one for Targums, but I would have to purchase them separately anyway. (Does anyone know if Logos sells the Talmud, Midrash, or other Medieval or Patristic commentaries in original languages?).

I'm a poor grad student, and I need to minimize my purchases at this point. But it would be cool to see a density graph when I search for a word.

Reverse interlinears are great for non-linguists, but also great if you want to see how particular words are translated (either into English or the LXX). There's more on reverse interlinears in this video: http://www.vimeo.com/16546076

This page shows the contents of the various base packages. If you crossgrade to a modern Scholars, you'll get morphologically tagged Targums, but DSS is only available in Portfolio or as an add on (and there's another on prepub). Neusner's translation of the Talmud is in pre-pub, his Mishnah is available as an add-on. There's no other original language Rabbinic documents that I'm aware of, although there's an increasing amount of good secondary literature on Second Temple and Rabbinic periods. Migne's Patrologica is also on prepub, but production is a very long way off.

If we're talking translations, there's also a Midrash collection, but I believe Ryan asked for original languages, which none of these are in, as far as I've understood it.

Thank you guys so much. I ended up breaking down and getting the Original Languages Library. The Targums; Greek-Hebrew reverse interlinear; Peshitta; Alignment of LXX-Targums-Hebrew, just seemed to make it a great deal.

I have another question about Searching now. Is there a way to specify a specific passage of Hebrew, and then have Logos tell me every repeated word in this passage? For example, I want to look highlight three psalms and see which words are repeated across those three.

I haven't found a training video that starts with a passage, rather than a word. It would also be useful for seeing the most frequent words in a particular book.

Probably the best way to see instances of words is to use a Morphological Search and specify a part-of-speech eg. @V OR @N in a range like Ps 1-3 (for chapters 1 to 3) . This will find all verbs and nouns in that passage and then use the Analysis view to see occurrences of each lemma or Result (manuscript word).

Note that I used a Hebrew bible - Lexham Hebrew-English Interlinear (LHI).

If searching by LEMMA can get you there ... you can use the method Dave showed you above but instead of having RESULT up top, drag LEMMA up there and make it first (all the way to the left). Does that do what you want?
