Logos Indexer crashes on Startup, Logos boots but crashes

Turn on diagnostic logging. Start L4 with the Ctrl key held down & see if it loads to blank layout. If it crashes upload the logs to the forum, so we see what is happening.

The message in the log files is that the disk image is corrupted. I assume that's a bad thing. Thanks to bandwidth caps from my ISP I can't really afford to download the files on my computer. Since it's almost time for the library to close, I'd appreciate it if someone would tell me if there's a way I can fix this without uninstalling or if I should go to the local library and try and download Logos 4 again.

Your Logos version is 4.1 SR-4 (4.10.4.6514). This is found in the first line of your crash log.

I would guess that there is one of two things going on, and not knowing how to parse all the error messages, I wouldn't be able to distinguish which one is meant.

The first possibility is that you have a bad spot on your hard drive. To fix that, open Windows Explorer, go to "Computer" and right click on your hard drive and select "Properties" (on the bottom of the right-click menu). In that dialog box, select the "Tools" tab and click the button that will check your hard drive for errors. This will probably require a reboot to finish. Follow the instructions and hopefully (if this is the issue) Windows will recover your data.

The second possibility is that only one of these databases is corrupt. In that case, it would be a matter of rebuilding your databases. I wouldn't be able to say conclusively, but it appears to me to be your update manager database. This is found here: C:\Users\[your name]\AppData\Local\Logos4\Data\[random numbers]\UpdateManager Now I can't guarantee what will happen, if you delete it, but if it's like all the other databases, Logos will rebuild it upon noticing it's missing. NOTE: even if this is the issue, there's no way to guarantee that the 1st possibility is also in play here, nor that there aren't other databases also corrupted.

In desperation I deleted the databases. No crash yet, it download a 58 mb file (lots better than the 10-15 GB or so for a reinstall). It regenerated the databases and appears to be reindexing everything it has been at it now for a couple of hours. It says: "Preparing your library, this may take a while"

I managed to get some of the portions of the books I needed emailed to
me so I'm able to do my work which is the most important thing. It
makes me think that my combined (some digital some paper) is still a
wise strategy.

It seems that this is crashing while accessing Resource Manager. The only way to fix that is to delete the files ResourceManager.db and ResourceManager.db-journal from the location C:\Users\{User name}\AppData\Local\Logos4\Data\{Random string}\ResourceManager

I would rename these files rather than delete them so if this creates another set of problems we can at least undo the damage. Change the file id from .db to .ob or something like that.

After deleting (renaming) the files, start Logos again and see if you can get past this error. Upload the logs if that doesn't work.

Good thinking, I deleted the files but knowing that they reside in the recycle bin and can be restored if necessary. When I looked in the folders L4 had already regenerated the files when I started it up again but all I get is the "preparing your library, this may take a while" It's now been running for about 3 hours and I haven't got the main window up.

That seems excessive. I don't know now that if you kill it you can just restore the other database files and try again. If it goes another couple of hours without getting to indexing that's what I'd think about. You are pretty much doing a fresh install which can take a long time esp. if you have a lot of resources. Again, give it another hour or so to get to stage 2 or 3.

Praise God gentleman! After waiting another hour or two and still seeing the "please wait" I right clicked on the logos icon and chose "Restart Logos" (there were only two options "restart" and "pause indexing"

I was initially discouraged because it seemed to kick it back to step one of three indexing but, sure enough in about a minute or two the main window appeared and everything is back to normal.

I very much appreciate all of your help men. This makes my final preparation for tomorrow that much easier. I thank God for your help.

Au contraire. I had this too. The preparing your library message can take a long time for a large library. I know. I just went through something similar.

You're welcome. I saw your post after I posted mine. I just wanted to make sure Mark knows that "this can take a while" is a bit of an understatement for a very large library (and/or a slower computer), as Logos is setting up all the databases in preparation for indexing. I have a library of just over 2500 resources and I was watching that message for a couple of hours too.
