Resource Types Overview

Would anyone have access to a video, article, or diagram that explains different resource "types", and suggests some of the most reliable/popular in each category?

IE: What is the difference between an encyclopedia & dictionary? A lexicon or dictionary? etc.

you probably already know this, but just in case...

In the Library window (Ctrl L) you can view all your resources by Type (according to how Logos has tagged them). Select the Detailed View, then click on Type column heading. You will see all the types as shown below. When you click on one of the type rows, L4 will expand that type to show you all the books for that type.

If you do not see Type as a column, then see the wiki article Available Columns in the detailed view and the article under it Rearranging Columns in the detailed view

Hi Steve,

I did know that, but I was thrown off by the many "Dictionaries" that have been labeled as "Encyclopedias" in Logos 4. I'm assuming it's because most of the entries in those dictionaries aren't defining the headword, but presenting an article to explain it in a more thorough manner.

In that case, it makes me wonder why the publishers named the book a dictionary.

With regard to your request for most reliable/popular that all depends on what you are looking for.

Among Bible 'encyclopedias' the Anchor Yale Bible Dictionary is the best in Logos. On many of our Home Pages recently there was a 25% off coupon code to buy it for $199.

The collection called The Essential IVP Reference Collection (not currently listed on the Logos site but available elsewhere) contains a number of very valuable resources at a bargain price. One can shop around for this one and get some excellent pricing.

I have the ISBE, Rev. and appreciate it. Also the Baker Encyclopedia, Nelson's New Illustrated, both the Eerdman's volumes, and others. I've listed them in order of my appreciation of them.

Anchor Yale is pretty scholastic, Nelson's is lay oriented. There is a scale in-between.

Among Commentaries you will get lots of suggestions. For laypeople I recommend the Tyndale Commentary series (strangely absent from the Logos website but available elsewhere), followed by the New American Commentary. For pastors, there are a number of great choices and a lot depends on one's needs.

Among Journals the best buys are the collections put out by Galaxie publishing (they are now up to volume 13).

Among Lexicons, BDAG is the standard Greek lexicon and the standard Hebrew lexicons are BDB and HALOT (available as a bundle with BDAG). (Note that a free abridged BDB is available.)

I'll continue to look into those resources. I probably have a good portion of them, as I currently have L4 Platinum with the IVP 3.0 package. I'm currently trying to find my way around them, decide which ones to pull into my regular studies (as a lay person), and currently developing a Amazon universal wish-list for Logos resources in the case extra money comes available for Logos in the future.

While I've had platinum for nearly a year, I'm amazed every time I open it at the vast array of resources it has and how helpful they are as I actually learn how to use them.

That is a great set of resources. You can do an awful lot with them. You might add the revised ISBE or The Nelson's Illustrated Dictionary some time. The Tyndale Commentary is a good set and has the advantage of covering every book of the Bible which some of your commentary sets do not.

The Tyndale Commentary set and the ISBE are on my wish-list. I'd also like to add the HALOT too.

At some point, though, I need to stop buying resources and start using them to at least a 10th of their potential.
