Need to be able to keylink across data types sometimes.

I've found that when encountering Latin words and phrases that are used in English texts, I will try to look up the Latin by keylinking. Often, though, the Latin word or phrase (e.g., "sui generis" or "exempli gratia") is not to be found in the Latin resource targets, but it is found in English resources like the Concise OED or the M-W Coll. Dict.

It would be nice if we could keylink Latin to an English dictionary. I'm not sure if this would be needed for other languages. Perhaps the English dictionaries can be set up as Latin targets too?

Yes, MW Dict can be used as a keylink for Latin words, but only if they belong to the English data type. These are Latin words commonly used in the English language. MW cannot be used as a keylink target for words that belong to the Latin data type but you would like this to be so. It would become an English and Latin dictionary if its word base were expanded for all Latin words. Is this what you envisage? Or do you want only the current "Latin" words to be classified as both Latin and English?

Either would be fine. The problem is that Logos has been industrious in tagging Latin words in English contexts with the Latin data type. The Dictionary of Latin a Greek Theological Terms mixes data type entries of Latin, Greek and transliterated Greek and can be a target for all of those types. Perhaps the general English dictionaries could also be mixed data types. The problem is that the Latin term is tagged as English in the M-W and COED dictionaries, but it's tagged as Latin in the source text.

I've also had problems when the text is tagged as type "Text" (I find this in non-resource windows from time to time). And I'm not sure how to hand that. I've added some Greek lexicons to the 'Text" data type, but I feel that anything could show up as "Text".

So a more general solution might be to have a definable default data type ("Text" perhaps, or "English") that is used as a fall back data type if the keylinking is unsuccessful in the tagged data type. Or even a list of data types to try, just as each data type has a list of resources to try.

A list of data types to try has some merit as it would not affect the classification of dictionary resources for keylinling purposes. But it might affect the way you classify resources for the English data type as I set their order for biblical usage rather than a dictionary definition!

What about putting your English dictionary as a second option in your keylink to the Latin words? Like I have my first option for English words Anchor Bible Dictionary and as a second option I use more general dictionary (Collins English Dictionary). Wouldn't that work in a similar way for Latin?

EDITED: Yes, I see now that it doesn't allow us to use any English dictionary in Latin Keylinking.

Right. The resource has to be internally configured to be a target for specific data types.

I would leave the English keylink order the same--it would just check the bible-oriented references first before finding it in the regular dictionaries, which are last in my list of keylink targets. And if it found a hit in a bible dictionary first, I wouldn't consider that a problem.
