Screen Capture Software

Hi all....
I'm looking for a screen capture software, preferably free or really affordable, that is reliable and easy to use.
Any help or suggestions would greatly be appreciated.
Thanks

Jing is free and easy to use. That's what many of us use. For some other suggestions, see: http://wiki.logos.com/Screenshot

I just added my current favorite PicPick to that list.

I'm looking for something that makes your screen capture a video with audio commentary.

There is a FireFox extension that does that called Download Helper. It's free, but they want you to buy their video converter to convert to other video formats. Also, it only works on some sites.
EDIT: Wait, if you want to capture streaming video, the above will work. If you want to capture your own work and record it with audio, then this page has two such programs you may want to consider (but I've not used any of these). There are other sites that host free and paid software that you could search.

I'm not sure about any of the freebies, but I use Camtasia Studio for that. There's got to be a cheaper alternative. I know that several other Logos users have made videos with voice-over, so I'm sure someone else can recommend something less pricey.

Blueberry software offers three different versions. All of them, including the free version, allows you to record your voice.

Check out Jing, it can make videos of what you see on your monitor. Not sure about the audio part along with video, you may have to go to a Camtasia product as Rosie suggests.

Yes, I just tested it, and the free version of Jing will record both audio that is part of the video, and input from the microphone. It limits the length of your recording and the format you can save it to (.swf only). You'd need Jing Pro to remove those limitations. Camtasia is made by the same company (Techsmith), and has lots more professional features.

You might also check out CamStudio - I have not used it, but I have heard others speak favorably of it.

I use an older version of Faststone Capture for my basic screen capture needs - http://www.faststone.org/FSCaptureDetail.htm . I stick w/ the older version because that one was free. The current one has a lot of enhancements, including recording video and audio. I can't speak to how well it does that, but I thought I'd mention it. If I had to do this kind of work a lot, I'd definitely use Camtasio Studio.

I use BBFlashback to record my videos. As far as I know, it's the only free application that allows you to record at unlimited length. Jing is limited to 5 minutes last time I looked. I liked BBFlashback so much that I now have the professional version, which allows me to edit. The only problem I have had is that occasionally the video/audio get out of sync - but this is something like 0.1s over a 30minute recording, so most of the time it is unnoticeable. Other than that it's been excellent.
This is my personal Faithlife account. On 1 March 2022, I started working for Faithlife, and have a new 'official' user account. Posts on this account shouldn't be taken as official Faithlife views!

Actually SnagIt is up to Version 10 now and it does do video and voice capture as well. I just did a test and created a video that lasted 10 minutes, and it only used up about half of the maximum file size.
You can get a 30 day free trial of the current version to see if it does what you want. But I think if you try it, you won't want to be without it.
I have been using it for several years (since at least 2002), and it is my favorite screen capture software.

Thanks to all who have offered ideas for video capture software. I've wanted to play around with the genre, but not spend a lot of money. The options provided in this thread make that outcome possible.

Microsoft's Snipping Tool is included in Windows 7, Vista, and Experience Pack for Windows XP Tablet Edition.
Observation: Apple includes several Screen Capture options with Mac OS X (keyboard shortcuts and Grab utility). Apple's Preview utility useful for cropping and annotating images (and pdf's).

Thanks for posting everyone... I downloaded the free trial version of Camtasia. I really like it so far. I would also be able to purchase it with my academic discount after the 30 days... I really like that.
Thanks again.....

Didn't see this when I scanned through the thread - Snap 4 from Ashampoo
I have used snagit for several years now to capture screenshots (have not tried video on the companion program Camtasia), but one of my uses was for a scrolling window and that function stopped working.
I got Snap 3 full version free as a one-day promotion (no longer available) for Snap 4 and I like it. I have used the video function as well as the screenshot function.
Snap 4 has a free trial on the right side of this page
http://www.ashampoo.com/en/usd/pin/0424/Multimedia_Software/Ashampoo-Snap-4
The price is reasonable.

Dominic, thanks very much for the info! *smile* I'm on my my 5th day with Windows7 and hadn't figured that out yet. I've always used OneNote, and I'm sure that will work also; however, the "snip" tool is good to know about!DominicM said:Chuck A said:Hi all....

For anyone who is interested you can get the full version of Snap 3- screen and video capture software
using the code XMAS-2010
at this link:
http://www.ashampoo.com/en/usd/lpa/christmasgift?c=XMAS-2010
4 free other programs are available, but I have not tried them. I have used Snap 3 and I like it.
This is probably a limited time offer.

Barry,
Thanks for that pointer. I had an old version of their Burning Studio product, but this one better under Windows 7. It may take a bit to get used to their screen capture software - a bit more intrusive, but I'll give it a try. I prefer if it just copies to the clipboard and dismisses itself. I use Paint.NET to modify the image from there.
