Infographic - The Tabernacle
Great infographic of the Tabernacle appeared on the home page today.
The size comparison has me fooled though.
Anybody have any off the cuff comparisons for size with
Galic Football Pitch
Australian Rules Pitch
Hockey Pitch
or even a Beach Volleyball Court.
I would actually be happy with any comparison to the playing area of a sport that appears in the International Olympics lineup.

I agree, Residents of the USA can be kinda snobbish. Perhaps you should design your own info-graphic. Then you could compare it to something that wouldn't fool you. [:)] Something like the Loch Ness Monster.[:P]

Though in moments of weakness I might be tempted to typecast the residents of the USA 'snobbishness' would not be one of the terms that would come to mind.

On a good communication level that part of the infographic falls down because, outside of American military bases the rest of the world really has no idea how big an american football pitch is.
Now the (London) Times uses a common descriptor of 'times the length of a London Bus': but their publication isn't really for international consumption.

I agree that this is a poor size comparison. Even in the US, this size comparison can be problematic. Since Canada is also part of North America (maybe arrogant is the term you have in mind), is this a US field or a Canadian field? Is this the playing area itself, or does it include the end zones and sidelines which are officially a part of an "American" Football Field? Is it an NFL field or an NCAA field?

You can add to that the uncertainty of the exact size of the tabernacle to begin with. We can know the exact proportions, but not the exact measurements.

And of course, the Infographic says American Football Field - now is this "American Football" Field - fairly specific - or "American" football field - in which it could refer to any of the 35 countries which are situated in the Americas, for whom most of them Football refers to soccer.
A technical term such as "American Football" should readily be identified as such.

I like it the way it is for those in the United States.... [:D] and I really do not want to lose what I already have.
But perhaps they could ADD a European Version to the Infographics.

Same with the infographic on the Sea of Quail. There are several references there to 'miles' that could helpfully have had kilometre equivalents in brackets, and another to '3 feet', which for many users could have helpfully have carried 'almost 1 metre' in brackets.
Here in the UK we still use miles, but for shorter measurements most people - and particularly the younger generation - now exclusively use centimetres and metres. Many don't know what 'a foot' is. I lived in South Africa for a couple of years and found that, there, 'miles' meant little or nothing to the majority of people.
We are all guilty, I think, of imagining that the world revolves around our own way of doing things. Happily, today's communications revolution and the shrinking of the world to a 'global village' are making more of us aware of the need to use illustrations and terminology that will reach those who do things differently.
