Problem syncing reading plans

    Hi Michael

    Not Alabama but....

I am currently on  4.5 Beta 5 (4.50.0.1336) on my desktop which, according to the release notes, contains sync 2

I haven't seen references to sync 2 in the release notes, can you tell me which ones it is in please?

Should sync 2 be functioning now (since it is included in the beta desktop release) or is this awaiting an update to the iPhone app? (Is there a beta channel for the iPhone too?)

My understanding is that when sync 2 is available on the desktop it will need an update to the iPad app as well.

I am not aware of a beta channel for the iPhone / iPad app

Recently I noticed that Logos appeared to have sorted out the licencing issues with NIV and that these were also available on my iPhone (any update on NA27 yet?). I noticed this because last year's reading plan "NIV 2010" suddenly showed up on my iPhone. The strange thing is that I had deleted this plan from my desktop 2-3 months back - which seems to indicate that the sync profile from which the iPhone gets its data had not been updated for some time?

I wonder whether the appearance of the reading plan and the availability of NIV on the iPhone are related or whether the reading plan just appeared when it did in relation to the sync issues.

    Hope these thoughts are useful

A major feature of 4.5 is an improved sync infrastructure for highlighting and notes. It is "behind the scenes." I am not a programmer, but I assume that it is "working" now for those who are on beta channel. The iPad app, however, is NOT yet working with sync v2. An update will be needed later.

Why does my ESV plan work well yet sync is not picking up my reading plan for the 2011 NIV?

I don't know. One question, however. When you say that the ESV plan is "working well," do you mean that you can mark "read" on your iPad and minutes later it is "marked read" on your desktop computer? It is well documented that it can take up to two weeks for a reading plan to populate on the mobile device (because of the sync issues).

Do you know when NA27 and associated resources like Metzger's textual commentary will be available on the iPhone?

Sorry, no. I am just a volunteer, as are all the MVP's. We do not have any "insider" info on things like that. As you may have read elsewhere, it is the policy of Logos to make resources available to users on as many devices as possible. The publishers, however, must agree to this. Thankfully the NIV was recently made available to us.

    Sure. (Bold type is mine)

Please Note: Important Change to Synchronization coming for Notes*, custom Highlighting styles*, Favorites, and some Preferences**

When 4.5 Beta 1 is released, Logos 4 will be using the new Sync v2 service to synchronize your Notes*, custom Highlighting styles*, Favorites, and some Preferences**. This is similar to the change to Sync v2 for Copy Bible Verses during the 4.3 Beta.

This change will affect those users who log in under the same account on two computers, where one is running the stable 4.3 version and the other is running the 4.5 Beta:

    • Changes made to the features above on the computer running 4.3 will not be synchronized to the computer running the 4.5 beta.
    • Changes made to these features on the computer running the 4.5 Beta, will not be synchronized to the 4.3 install.
    • All other data will continue to sync to the server normally.
    • When the stable version is updated to 4.5, modified items will be sent to the Sync v2 service and merged with your current data.

*IMPORTANT: The 4.5 Beta will include major improvements to how Notes and Highlighting are saved and how they reference custom styles. More information about this will be provided prior to release. Due to these improvements, and the Sync v2 changes, the usual warnings about participating in Logos 4 Beta testing are especially important to consider.

**Sync v2 for certain Preferences, such as SavedResourcePosition, will improve syncing of these values with mobile clients.

    Thanks for your quick reply.

In the release notes for 4.5 Beta 1 (http://wiki.logos.com/Logos_4.5_Beta_1) it says "Synchronization: Sync v2 implemented for Notes, custom Highlighting styles, Favorites, and certain Preferences, such as SavedResourcePosition."

I took this as saying that sync v2 was implemented in this release but maybe that's not correct?

Should sync 2 be functioning now (since it is included in the beta desktop release) or is this awaiting an update to the iPhone app? (Is there a beta channel for the iPhone too?)

    Thanks for explaining this.

You may be right. However when I first purchased the iPhone I noticed that my NIV reading plan did not sync through and I seem to recall reading something (or maybe this was just an assumption I had made) that this was because the resource it referred to was not available on the iPhone. I had subsequently checked a few times to see if NIV was available and it wasn't. However when the NIV reading plan appeared, I checked and saw that the NIV versions were now available so I assumed that the reading plan had appeared because the resource it referred to was now available (1+1=2). However I accept that this may simply be coincidence.

Any idea when NA27 / UBS4 will be available?

    Thanks Alabama.

    I remember now!

I knew that v2 was coming in 4.5 but had forgotten that it was there from beta1

Thanks for the pointer, I had missed it. Having seen it, I believe it to be correct.

Sorry, as Alabama, I have no knowledge about this.

Yes - that is what I mean. Normally when I mark the day's readings as "read" on my iPhone, it updates the desktop app within an hour or so. The only time I had a bit of trouble was when I was out of the country for a couple of days and had data roaming turned off. When I came back, the iPhone said it could not retrieve sync data and created a new reading plan which appeared pretty soon afterwards on the desktop.

I am not sure how well it syncs the other way (if I mark things as "read" on the desktop) but will give it a go and see.

You are blessed. This is not the case for many of us. In fact, often checking "Read" on the iPad will create a duplicate on the computer.

Tried marking my daily reading plan on desktop. Did not update iPhone. When I subsequently updated the iPhone, it created a new plan on the desktop. Guess I'll stick to updating on the iPhone (in my current "blessed" state) till sync v2 is up and running.

As well all, please consider leaving negative feedback on Logos App as it is still rated as 4 to 4 1/2 stars, mind you only about 50 people responded and i know there is 40-50 threads about no reading plan.  We need to warn potential new users that what they advertise is NOT what you get!

My reading plan has created 9 duplicate plans.  I've now finished that plan.  Do you know of any easy way to delete those duplicate plans on my ipad and iphone?

It's been awhile since I have actually had a plan on my device, but you can do one of two things: 1) on iPhone, with your plans are, swipe the plan to left that you want to delete and a confirm DELETE button will pop up, press it.  2). On your Logos desktop, click on your reading Plan, then file, delete, or in one if the menus then delete (the drop down tab things).

In either case your deletion will not sync!

Thank you for that great tip.  Finally....I now have all multiple versions of my reading plans OFF my iPad.  One minor annoyance gone for 2011!    I'll track them on my iMac regardless where I might read them.  Maybe one day the programmers will be able to figure out how to solve the sync problem.  Best wishes to all of you for a pleasant New Year.

Same here. I figure it's holiday time, so I'll read along sans plan for a while. :)
