Bug: search results are not correct

I am doing some research on Martin Luther. Because Luther calls original sin "person-sin," I did a search on "person-sin" (with the quotes).

I expected, because I used quotes around my search string, that the results would only list where "person-sin" was found. L4 did not return "person-sin". The results of my search returned matches on the following phrases: "personal sin," "person's sin," "person sins," personality. Sin," "person's sinful," and "personal sinfulness."

If a user enters in a search string in quotes, then the results of the search needs to match what is in the quotes.

Make sure you uncheck "Match all word forms" in the panel menu for the Search panel. Quotes don't prevent word-stemming, but the menu option does. By the way, Logos ignores the hyphen (and any other special characters) and treats it like a space. I believe all this behavior is as designed.

I tried this "person-sin" with the dash between them in quotes and got the following hits

Notice that I got "person" and "sin" two different words treated as one hit.

Shouldn't the ONLY thing I get be "person-sin" EXACTLY?

Ahhh....I just noticed Todd's explanation of what I was seeing with Logos ignoring the hypnen....that's too bad...is there some workaround for this?

I think so. I also believe that the "-" should be treated as a letter and not as a special character. Then again, this is just MHO.

I agree tom..anything in quotes should override other search syntax behavior....otherwise...why use quotes?

match these words will produce hits for any combination of the words (implied AND) but "match these words" forces a match in that order & with no intervening words! That's why quotes are used.

I can see this, but it is not intuitive. When we are quoting someone, it is an exact match to what this person said. When someone quotes us, we do not want people to put words in our mouths.

When I use quotes in a search, I expect the results to be an exact match, not just a match on the word order.

I agree that this would be useful. Although there are instances where it's useful to have the behavior as it currently exists. I think some sort of "Quoted phrases match exactly" or "Ignore punctuation in quotes" switch option would be nice to have on the search menu (alongside Match all word forms and Match case).
