Preparing to migrate from Windows to Mac

I'm preparing to migrate from Windows to Mac, as I have a used MBP 2.33 core duo 2GRAM 200G HDD on its way.
I have a few questions.
I already see that it's probably best to run L4 Mac instead of L4 Win on Parallels.

That being so, what about my Libronix resources that may not have been converted to L4 yet? I have some note sets, too. How do I migrate them?

I am also in a rural area on satellite internet. My download threshold is 425M daily. That means I'll have to go to town for wifi and sit all day to get my downloads. Is it possible to move my L4 resources to a backup drive and then copy them to the Mac so that I can get around much of the downloading?

All resources are identical, with the exception of PBB books, which are not even usable yet in Logos4 windows. and yes you should be able to copy all your logos 4 files to a disk... location should be something like this-- /Users/YOURNAME/Library/Application Support/Logos4/Data/m7fvomqx.5xc/ResourceManager/Resources putting them in there should mean you have the latest versions of all your books already downloaded. You will have a new download from logos soon though... since 4.2 mac is close to ready to come out, it is the current beta and I am having few problems with it, but suppose to be a major improvement (I guess hence the jump to identical windows numbering).

I suppose that much depends on the size of your library.

However the Wiki has advice on transferring files from 'Windows' to 'Mac' if you do the bulk of the transfer that way your download time in town should be minimised.

The real time user is the indexing but the internet is not needed for that.

With 2 GB RAM, concur best to use Logos 4 Mac - upgrading to 4 GB (or more) would be better for running Windows in a virtual machine (e.g. parallels).

Boot Camp is an option - can choose to run Mac OS X or Windows.

Notes migration can only be done using WIndows http://wiki.logos.com/Importing_Notes_from_LDLS3 - then sync to Logos servers, followed by sync to Logos 4 Mac.

Wiki page has quick installation tips => http://wiki.logos.com/Quick_Installation_onto_Multiple_Macs including option for copying Libronix 3 resources to Mac using Logos 1.2.2 for Mac: verify resources can be read, then install Logos 4 Mac. Observation: Logos 4 Mac can read more older Libronix resources than Logos 1.2.2 (can use scan path command)

Logos offers Media Only DVD => http://www.logos.com/product/5579/logos-bible-software-4-media-only (useful for internet download constraints - can scan DVD resources).

After Logos 4 Mac installation, suggest turning off Automatically Download Updates (in Program Settings).

you should be able to copy all your logos 4 files to a disk... location should be something like this-- /Users/YOURNAME/Library/Application Support/Logos4/Data/m7fvomqx.5xc/ResourceManager/Resources putting them in there should mean you have the latest versions of all your books already downloaded.

Highly recommend using scan path command instead of copying resources directly to Logos 4 Resources folder - copy does not update several Logos 4 SQLite database files with resource information.

I've already imported all from L3 to L4 on PC. I was thinking that there may be something that I'm using in L4 that is still in L3 format.

If I've already imported all into L4 for PC, then it should be already synced to server?

Thanks for the help. I'm sure I'll be viewing this next week when I get to working on the issue. As it is, I'm already a day later due to Fed-Ex being hindered by winter weather in Memphis. MBP still somewhere in CO presently.

I was thinking that there may be something that I'm using in L4 that is still in L3 format.

Logos 4 Mac and PC share code base for reading resources.

So far so good.
I cannot tell at this point about the speed as compared to my PC. I think it's similar, but too soon to tell.

One question: I simply copied my Windows resources to a folder named "L4" on the Mac. The program sees them, but I'm wondering if Logos leaves those resources in that folder, or copies them to another folder?

The Logos scan command copies resources from a folder (e.g. "L4") to Logos 4 resource folder along with updating several SQLite database files with resource information and indexing words.

Since resource file names are identical on both platforms - could sort and compare lists of file names.

Suggest naming layouts on PC - sync on PC - sync on Mac - click Layouts menu on Mac (should have same named layouts as PC).

Yes - once indexing is done, could compare L4 contents with Logos 4 resource folder - delete resources in L4 that are in Logos 4 resource folder - if any resource(s) remain in L4, could issue scan path again.

Puzzling - after indexing completed on Mac and PC, have named layouts on both platforms, sync to Logos (waited for sync to complete), switch to other platform and sync from Logos (waited for completion), then used named layout.

Observation: unnamed layouts are not sync'd (show Snapshot | time in Layouts menu). Wiki page has Layouts information => http://wiki.logos.com/Layouts__

Following the Mac Expo in late January 2011, I will be switching to Mac products as well. It seems that the clouding function Logos takes use of would transfer all of your notes, reading plans, and other L4 files and be able to cloud on to my Mac version of L4? I know downloading and indexing must be done for the Mac version but will some of my books not be available (temporarily)?

During indexing, some resources will not show up in searches until indexing is complete. You will also see a separate set of search results for those indexes that are not merged. AFAIK, they still show up in your library though. BTW: This is exactly the same behavior as on the PC.

Im just wondering if I need to purchase the "one on one" service apple offers at their store to really learn all the little mac secrets or would I a) be able to pick it up myself with a little help from mac friends? or b) buy one of those Mac OS "For Dummies" books instead?

There is a difference, but I like to harass my Windows using friends whenever I have a chance.

Hi Adam

If you are reasonably computer savvy then picking up tips from your friends will probably be the way to go. Mac's come with very little documentation - when you hit a problem then hit the web - when you think something should be easier then hit the web (it usually is). When you get really stuck then phone a friend.

Some User Interface items different. Apple always has a Menu Bar on top of screen - showing menus for active program. In contrast, Windows places menu in application window. Since Apple logo in top left screen corner, Windows default start button is in lower left corner - ongoing result from Apple suing Microsoft over Look and Feel decades ago. Also, Microsoft tends to tweak user interface with every Office and Windows release.
