More Information Needed when indexing

I need to know how to know when my library is doing a full index versus a partial index of new resources. I just clicked on the merge link in searching and now I do know my system is indexing but it doesn't tell me how many resources as it did pre-Beta 7. It just tells me how long as it has since Beta 7. And, for the past two days, I thought the indexing that was going so fast was the full library and now I think it was just the new resources because it was less than an hour and it did not tell me how many resources are indexed.

I feel like a dog running in circles chasing its tail.

Is the only way I know what type of indexing it is doing is to tell by length of time...? I really need to know how many resources AND the length of time. If this is a user control that is definitely planned and coming, great! Thanks for your help.

When you download new or updated resources, Logos 4 does not reindex your entire library; it creates a supplemental index instead. This is what happened when the indexing time was less than an hour. When you chose to merge the supplemental index into the main index from the Basic Search panel, a full reindexing took place. If you choose not to merge them, the program will continue to display search results for the new resources in the separate New Resources section. Eventually, the program will automatically merge and reindex when the supplemental index is about a quarter of the size of the main index.

As a rule of thumb, you should be able to tell by the time remaining whether a partial or full reindexing is taking place. The majority of the time, it will be indexing just the new or updated resources.

We should be able to know exactly what is going on. "Rules of thumb" aren't good enough. The calculation of time remaining and the time it takes to stabilise an estimate can be considerable. Just revert to a simple count of the number of resources because my ROT for time remaining is much more accurate!

If it doesn't make it work any slower (a key requirement), I would like both. The time could also say "apx.".

"Logos is indexing, 4,000/10,000 resources complete, apx. 10 minutes remaining" (Note that these numbers represent ideal, not actual number of resources and indexing speed. )

Thanks, Melissa, for your response. What I am asking for in this thread and probably other threads is more user information of what is happening to my system. Windows Updater gives me the name of the file, the size of the file and then I decide "if" and "when" to download the files. Once that is done, I am informed as to what percentage has been downloaded and I can even see a box which shows me if it is downloading or installing and then, finally, it shows me a screen which tells me it is finished or completed.

I would like to know all of that with Logos updates or file downloads. At least, I need to know what files are being downloaded. There has to be a way to communicate that or for me to find it out. As far as indexing, I want to know how many files are being indexed either in the supplemental index or in the full index. Numbers matter. Why not a summary page?

Another analogy and perhaps not the best. When I have a problem with my computer and call Dell, they run software, I agree to it and they take over my computer but I can see everything being done to my system and I am on the phone talking to the individual doing it. They do not do things automatically without my knowledge. I can ask them questions as they fix it. Yes, I gave them permission to do whatever they deem necessary to help me but I am aware of what they are doing. I hope this makes sense. Why not a summary page?

One more example. Right now, I can see Libronix Updater when some files are being updated or added to my system. Why can't that continue? It gives me necessary knowledge in case something doesn't update correctly; I have gotten error messages and then I know what needs to be corrected.

This is reasonable, but there are a few things that cause us to put it off.... some info:

A) The information isn't really useful. It's like the old applications that showed the names of DLL's and data files in their splash screen as they were loaded. They don't tell you anything useful, and in the worst case scenario, tempt people to "outsmart the system" and break things by messing with individual files. How does it help to know that we updated "MSVCRT51.DLL"?

The downloaded is in a separate process than then app, so it's a little technically messy (though not impossible) to send the information over. Moreover, the downloaded knows filenames "AYBD.LOGOS4", not book titles, which can only be known by opening the resource.

C) We're not installed as a system-level component; we're inside your user area. Windows will tell you if our updater tries to "step outside the box" and do something to your overall system.
