In these day filled with so many temptations I find it strangely
encouraging to know that even A.W. Tozer had huge problems when it came to
books - as this little note from a biography shows:

"While still pastoring in Indianapolis, Tozer invited a good friend,
Dr. J.T. Zamrazil, to preach in a series of evangelistic meetings at his
church. One afternoon, Tozer took Zamrazil downtown to show him a beautiful,
leather-bound set of Emerson on display in the window of a bookstore. As the
two young men stood at the window, Tozer talked at length about Emerson and
what a good writer and thinker he was. Tozer had Emerson's complete works in
his library, but his set was "ragged and almost worn out." Zamrazil
could sense the temptation mounting in Tozer's mind.

Finally the two left to go somewhere else, but it was not long before Tozer
decided he should return to the bookstore for another look at Emerson. They
looked and again left, but Tozer could talk of nothing else. At last, he said,
"Let's go back for just one more look." That one more look was
Tozer's undoing.

The two men lugged the set home. As they entered the parsonage, Tozer began
excitedly to tell Ada (his wife) about his latest acquisition.

"Oh, Daddy," Mrs. Tozer cut in, "how could you when you know
the children need shoes and......."

By that time, Zamrazil had retreated to the guest room.

I thought some of you might be encouraged too!

I'm saving this to share with my wife ...

However, I'm sure she'll tell me that she agrees wholeheartedly with Mrs. Tozer.

Then sigh, because of the mutual burden that they've shared ...
