manual ? explanations?

I have Logos 4 installed on my mac and leave it til tomorrow to be make the machine less noisy.

I do not find any manual and the videos are so genera that they cannot help. I will try not to waste Christmas and give up for now, but I was unable to fin even a simple window to begin looking at the Hebrew Bible. When going to the guides I find on some kind of window in the midst which would not leave the screen. I surely will end by finding thins, but it seems it will be much time consuming, which is not user friendly if you allow me to say so.

Possibly this has been designed more for Pastoral use than for scholars (?).

To open a Hebrew text you can try this.

1. Click on the Library icon on the top Left of the program.

2. Type in the name of the book you want and then click on the Title of the book

3. Once open, you can type in the verse reference here...

4. If you click the little button I have circled below, Logos will let you open other books with Hebrew text.

There are other shortcuts you can learn. You can always get good advice by asking our users here on the forums.

Prof Goldman .... hope you have a good holiday. Others will chime in, but you best bet for a manual is http://wiki.logos.com/Table_of_Contents__ If you scroll down to 'layout' it has a good discussion on setting up your Logos4. Essentially you click on 'Library', select the book you want and it pops into the work area. You can then drag the tab around the window to where you want it. I know you're using a Mac but relative to your question on scholars, below is my setup for the OT. I have four blocks of tabs, to include both hebrew and greek interlinears, several apparatus, massorah, and so forth. In another floating window I keep my lexicons, etc. So, the whole thing is quite efficient.

Sorry that you are having difficulty with Logos. There is good help available within the program.

The accompanying screenshots should help you find it.

Click Help on the Menubar
Click Logos Bible Software Help on the menu drop-down
A pane opens at the right of your display with the Logos Help file. (as below)

Then just look for the specific help you want – How To is a good place to start.

Logos is a seriously powerful program but, as such, it has a lot of subtleties and functions which take some time to learn.

I have been using Logos for 17 years and I'm still learning new tricks.

The help is poor in Logos, unfortunately, although the basics are easy to get the hang of. I've made some tutorials that may help (http://www.4-14.org.uk/logos/tutorial-videos), particularly the second one. They're done on Windows, but it should translate fairly easily for you. As others have said, the key things you need to get going are the Library, Search, and the three guides (Passage/Exegetical/Bible Word Study). Start by exploring them (they're all covered in the video), then if you have specific 'How do I' questions, please just ask here.

Thank you for that. But am I obliged every time I sue Logos to roll the menus for the book in which I want to search?

I am afraid I will be obliged to go through the forum at every step of mine. I am considering either a refund or to keep Logos just for the rich material it contains and use Accordance for an easy and faster way go get to my Hebrew, Greek or Latin words or verses with their panes in a synopsis.

I understand there is a wonderful spirit in the Logos team and you guys are all very serviceable and nice persons, but I do think this program will need some improvements to be more user friendly.

" . . . could you describe what you experience with Accordance and expect in your Bible studies. Perhaps we can help you establish a process in Logos that will serve your needs and get you into the flow better.

But, yes, DO take some time off for Christmas! (I am working EARLY in the morning here, Easter Standard Time, finishing up my sermon so I can celebrate with my family when they wake up!)

You can set up Logos any way you like. You can drag books from the library into the shortcut bar at the top of the screen, or into favorites where you can assign them shortcut keys. That will give you quick access to the books you use most often.

You can also use the command bar - just start typing a few characters from the book's title.

Once you have a number of resources open and linked together and arranged how you wish, you can then save the layout so you can come back to that exact layout any time in the future.

Going to anything new can be daunting, it sounds like you have, or are familiar with, Accordance and Logos is new for you?

There are many ways to get to information in Logos. One very handy way, which I think covers your question is to use the nice 'Collections' feature in Logos as your own custom, special interest, resource list. Once you have a collection defined you can simply choose it as the thing to search.

You can define as many collections you wish, all with custom criteria...

I think once you get more familiar with it you will find there is a lot of flexibility in Logos.

From this statement it appears that you are speaking of the Instant Details window in Accordance. The Information panel in L4 is roughly equivalent. If you need assistance in setting up this panel, just let us know.

I note that in another thread you indicated that you had already decided to return L4. If this your decision?
