Unsure If My INSTALL Worked!?! Indexing Stopped With ONLY 23% of 6.77GB Downloaded According to Hove

Hi,

I've attempted to install Logos 4 Scholars Gold on my computer five times so far, and so far every one has failed.

This last time, I have 1,918 resources in my Library - BUT - I had about 1960 in my Libronix Scholars Gold Version 3. The "hover" message says: "Logos Bible Software is downloading updates (23% of 6.77 GB)" But there is no Internet activity and CPU usage was pegged before, and now it's only 4% and the "Indexing - First Time" message in the Ribbon Bar (forgot wording) has gone away.

I've gotten two serious error messages:

"Logos Bible Software 4 has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

"Logos Bible Software 4 Indexer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

But I didn't click on them or the install would have ended.

My system is as follows:
MS Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3;
AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3300+, 2.41 GHz;
895 Meg memory available (out of 1 GB installed);
26 Gig open on my hard drive;
IE7;
MS Office 2003;
Virtual Memory -- Min 4096 Max 20480.

I don't know what to do next. Since the "hover" message is still there (all though it hasn't moved), I don't want to exit the program.

Any help would be appreciated.

Your log file shows that you're running a rather old version of Logos (4.0a); the latest version is 4.2 and it fixes the crash you've encountered. Since the crash is preventing the automatic update system from downloading updates, you'll need to manually download and run the installer from http://www.logos.com/downloads/logos4. Once it's installed, it should download and index the rest of your library.

Hi Bradley,

Thank you so much for your reply. I downloaded the updated Logos4Setup program that you directed me to and I am running it now. Now it says that it is downloading 1% of 3.86GB - so the previous Install loaded some Resources correctly and it is proceeding from where the other left off. Also, I did NOT get the first of the two errors about the Logos4 error that needs to be closed, etc - so that is a good sign.

I really appreciate the speedy response!

Hi Bradley and Dave,

Well, it's about 4:30AM and the Indexing has started. I have NOT received the second of the two error messages that I received on earlier attempts to install Logos 4 - so again, it seems that this install might complete. I restarted Logos 4 (when recommended to do so) and now I see the "First-time indexing underway" message again with about five hours of indexing started (although the time remaining fluctuates.)

I started this installation at about 9:00AM on Tuesday, December 28th and it's looking like it will end up being about a 24 hour process to get me up and running with Logos Scholar's Gold Version 4 (from Libronix Scholar's Gold Version 3.) I am really looking forward to giving Logos 4 a test drive!

Well, my downloading (almost 7GB) and indexing completed about a half an hour ago (after about 28 hours!) I fired up Logos 4 and checked my Library and the number of Resources was 1922 (and as I reported in my initial post, my Libronix Scholar's Gold Version 3 had upwards of 1960 resources and I understood the upgrade to Logos Scholar's Gold Version 4 to contain more new resources besides what I already have in Version 3. So, I am confused?

Actually I had one other installation question as well. I read somewhere that the installation should not be paused or interrupted the first time it indexes and since mine was interrupted, can I expect any problem at all? Could my diminished number of resources have something to do with the incomplete (previous) installations? BTW, after each installation that failed, I removed Logos 4 from my system using Add/Delete programs. I ran CCleaner to remove any trace and I ran Registry Mechanic to fix the Registry. I also rebooted my computer as well. So all vestiges of previous attempted installations should have been removed and hopefully not effect the successful (4.2) upgrade.

The problem with comparing Libronix numbers and Logos4 numbers is that certain L3 resources are not managed by L4:

Libronix Help (about 22) and PBB resources (whatever you own!) --> all with *.lbxoeb names.
About 3 Reverse Interlinear resources are not counted as separate resources.

OTOH certain L3 non-resources are converted to resources in L4 eg Timelines + the extras you get with L4 Scholar's!

So there are at least 25 L3 resources that are NOT going to be in L4, balanced by at least 14 EXTRA resources. If you have about 30 PBB resources then you have pretty well accounted for the difference.

I deduced it was 12 hours from two of your posts, and it is roughly what I expected; therefore not excessive. Quad core computers like mine would take 2 to 3 hours!

It is definitely the most cost-effective way to improve your experience with L4, especially as it looks like you have lost memory to the graphics chip/card.

I am finding that Logos 4 is running so slowly on my computer that I am considering going back to Libronix 3! [:O] So, I don't think that upgrading my memory is actually an option - I think it's a necessity! [8-)] Unfortunately, I can't afford a new computer at the moment, but if a memory upgrade will help speed things up - I'll definitely go that route for now, until I can get a new computer. I am also trying to see if there are any upgrades for my mother board that I can do as well.

Logos 4 is a stress test for our computers.

Two things will boost your speed. First going to 4 GB of RAM, if your computer can take that much. Using a 32 bit operating system you will not get to access all of the 4 GB, but over 3 GB of it. You might spend up to $100 for this depending on the RAM you need.

Moving to a 7200 RPM drive will help a good bit. (Your specs don't tell me what speed your drive is, but if you have a laptop it is probably 5400 RPM). That would mean a complete reinstall, but I did that and am very glad I did. A pretty good size 7200 RPM drive costs under $100.

You can stick to L3 until you can afford a new computer, or for about $200 (maybe less) and a bit of work have a machine that will handle L4 acceptably (but never as quickly as L3).

My desktop can only be upgraded to a max of 2Gig and I am looking into that already, besides upgrading my processor. I don't know how much good that will do, since my computer and any CPU upgrades that I am allowed to do will be pretty old, but it's worth a shot.

My system drive ("C") is a 7200RPM drive but it's only 160GB. I have an external drive ("L") that is 1TB and - with Libronix 3 - I have all of my resources moved over to the external drive because there's more room. I have no idea where to look for my resources for Logos 4 because it's not set up like Libronix 3 and because I haven't found any documentation or any settings within the program that will tell me where the resources are located. I've spent most of the evening looking into the upgrades for my CPU and the CPU is an AMD Athlon and I am unfamiliar with the models, so I don't know how much benefit I can tweak out of an upgrade.

You can install Logos 4 on other than the C: drive by doing a custom install. Unlike Logos 3 there is no easy way to split the Resource files from the rest of the L4 installation. (You can do this using redirect software, however).

I am not sure any processor upgrade you could do with your system board would do much for you. You have a single core processor. I can't tell from what I can find that it is even hyper-threaded. So it will always be slow.

I don't know your graphic card specs, either, but likely it is underpowered for L4.

As I said, L4 is a beast for a computer. You really need all the computer you can afford to run it. I hope it won't be necessary but you may find that you will only be able to run L3 on your computer acceptably.

Well, I just managed to upgrade my hardware up just one notch - but I'm into the "multi-processor" world now. The specs for my new system are:

Dell OptiPlex 745 - Intel Core 2 Duo 1.8GHz - SFF
160GB Disk - 4GB RAM - Windows XP Pro SP3
Dell Dual Monitor Video Card ATI Radeon x1300 256MB PCI-e

I just made a new Logos 4 installation on the "new" computer and the indexing took about 6 hours instead of the 12 hours calculated above for my Pentium 4 - so that's an improvement. Unfortunately though, I am having some problems on the new system. I think it might be because the computer and the Internet connection where shut off by a well meaning family member [:@] , but it continued again when I powered everything up again. So I don't know if a disrupted install would effect anything - even though I was hoping for a totally "clean" install because of the trouble I had listed above with my Pentium 4. But, I've gotten the "blue screen of death" on my "new" system - but I guess that's for another thread! [:'(]

Somewhere along the line I read a Logos Forum thread that recommended running a memory test with scrolling issues in Logos 4, so I got a free RAM tester. You download an image file and burn it to a CD and then it boots on the computer that you want to test and runs a battery of tests on your memory. I ran it for 16 hours and it passed all the tests 14 times without one single memory error, so that's a relief. [Y] At least I think it is - because now I have to figure out why Logos 4 is crashing my "new" system when I'm scrolling through the Passage Guide report. Oh well, like I said, that's a separate thread. [;)]
