New International Commentary question

Hello Logos forum, I am considering purchasing the New International Commentary series but I'd like to find out if anyone that has used it has found it useful enough to justify the price. I'm willing to invest in my craft but I want to make wise choices. What makes it worth the money...even at the discounted price?

In the opinion of most, it is the best heavyweight set available for evangelicals and others appreciative of evangelical approaches to Scripture. NIGTC, BECNT and Pillar are similarly excellent, but are significantly less complete. If you're not looking for evangelical methodology, you should perhaps be looking at Anchor or Hermeneia. If you're looking for evangelical comments, but want middleweight not heavyweight then Tyndale is probably the best.

Have you ever used a volume in the NICNT before? If not, I would look over one at a library first. It is an in-depth commentary, which could be what you are looking for, but it is not for everyone.

There really are two parts to this question:

First, which has nothing to do with Logos per se, is the New International Commentary a good commentary set and does it match your requirements as a commentary set? For that you can go to resources like this http://www.bestcommentaries.com/grid.aspx which review commentary sets. You can also read "New Testament Commentary Survey" by D.A. Carson which is an in-depth resource for reviews of commentary sets. You can even get the book on Logos here — http://www.logos.com/product/5342/new-testament-commentary-survey-6th-ed. Obviously for any commentary set not all volumes are equally strong, having said that the New International Commentary set is very well received.

Secondly, is it helpful to have the whole set electronically in Logos? Obviously the answer to that is a definite yes.

So if your conclusion to the first question is that NICOT & NICNT looks a good match to your needs and it fits in your budget (I got mine on Logos' payment plan) then you will find it a good tool.
