Can anyone detail the performance improvements in 4.2

Hi — I'm not running the beta of 4.2, but I was interested to ask those who are what they have found regarding performance improvements in 4.2 over current release version?

Are there improvements? Overall, in the user interface (panels, pop-ups, context menus, menus, scrolling, reading), in searching?

Any information appreciated.

Hi Patrick,

This is coming from someone who is generally content with the speed of L4 Mac except for a few areas. I run an 2008 MBP 2.4 with 4 Gigs of RAM.

Overall speed improvements are pretty much across the board. Exceptionally fast is the parallel resources; load time in switching layouts; load time for Text Comparison. I have never had a scrolling lag. Right mouse menus are within a second.

There are some bugs in the beta, so be aware of those before making the jump. Parallel Passages in the PG is slow as is syntax searching. Overall, I find it to be about as fast as my L4 Win. I find indexing much faster when adding new resources as well. As to searches that have lots of hits, it still takes some time to show the results, but that is the case with the Win version as well. I do not have two macs, one with stable and another with beta, so I cannot compare directly.

I guess everyone's mileage may vary, as some either use the program differently than I do or have greater expectations.

To follow up, 4.2 beta 4 has improved the speed of parallel passages. My PG loads with all sections open in around 10 seconds, which is comparable if not better than L4 Win.

Thanks for uploading — I did get a chance to look at it before you took it down. I notice, unless I am mistaken, that there does not seem to be any major change in what I would call the 'user interface' speed. It still takes some time for screens to draw, the right mouse context menu to come up in a Bible passage.

Is this correct, or have you noticed an improvement in the user interface area?

I guess our expectations are different and my standards are lower. Right mouse takes maybe 1 second.. parallel resources maybe 2 or 3 seconds. It still takes some time to open layouts. I think these are comparable with the Win version. None of these are speed issues for me, none distract me from study of God's Word. 4.2 Beta 4 now has the parallel resources opening in a few seconds. Given where L4 Mac is coming from, this is great.

I guess our difference in perspective is that my standard is L4 Win. Perhaps that accounts for what we expect from L4 Mac.

Mmm, I never really ran L4Win directly on Windows machine, only on a virtual machine on Mac waiting for the Mac release to ship, so I don't really have direct experience to judge against for that one. As you know the Mac performance question is a bit of a hot potato with the waters muddied because there are a number of interrelated factors determining (user perception) performance. I was (on the UI side) using a comparison criteria of Mac apps generally and as we know there is a difference.
