Practical question on storing comments on specific Scriptures

I just found a great paragraph [in a Background Commentary] on Matthew 21:12 (which I am not currently studying but) I want to save it in the most efficient way possible in L4. Through the months and years, this kind of scenario will be coming up over and over. I want my work in Logos to pay off. "Accidental" discoveries today - as exciting as they may be - could easily evade recall [under a pile of Library Search Results tomorrow.

My first choice would be to open a Note file / name it after the Scripture reference / paste the url into the note and then close it without dragging it into any folder in Favorites. I know that anytime I search on that reference it will come up in My Content. (Maybe I should also add a few keywords)

PS - I don't want to have a huge list show up under the 3 visual Filters circles as I am afraid this could slow down my system as well as become unmanageable..

Ron, I use clippings to save quotes from any books and resources filed according to the subject of my study.

If I want anything to be attached to the given Bible reference, I use notes. I can see them later as I come to that Scripture in my Bible.

I am sure others will advice you with more elaborate system [:)]

I guess the issue here is that clippings cannnot be linked to bible refs like Notes can. What about allowing clippings and notes to be combined in a single file? Then one could add a bible-referenced note to a clippings fille! The clipping could then be accessed from the bible reference in every bible/commentary ...

If I want a note linked, I just use a "Notes" file. Otherwise, I put everything in Evernote (www.evernote.com). I have over 1100 notes and have used this for several years. It's a great way to keep notes organized and synced across multiple computers and devices.

This is what I do too. I will one day have a HUGE list of Clippings / Notes / and Folders storing them in Favorites. I just want to work smart today so I don't need to do alot of re-working of my system later on. Logos has grown so much since the initial Tutorial videos first appeared. We were initially given "work - arounds" for some functions. now ... we have come a long way and I would like my work habits to be as up to date as possible.

BTW - I just created a Clipping and a Note file. The Clipping, I added in the form of a url to the Note file. Then I attached the Note file to the Scripture reference. So, it can be done right now with Logos. The Clipping will be two clicks away though instead of only one (can you stand it?) It's great.

It is that easy to remember and to use. In this way you can remember the exact page where you read something of interest. I went to the site and downloaded it (free) and will look at it later to see if I will be able to use it longterm. I had another program I used for about 6-7 years (Software By Design - Notebook) but I recently felt it was impractical so have not loaded it onto my new laptop.

You can "copy" you clippings files into a "favorites" file. I have my Favorites files set up with a "file folder" for each book the the Bible and subdivided into each chapter. You "drag" your clippings file into the appropriate book/chapter folder and there it is (along with all my other notes or clippings pertaining to that particular book/chapter). Mark Barnes has done a video on the beginnings of this approach and I'm not sure (haven't taken the time to look) if that is a completed work or not.

Setting up the Favorites is a time consuming "job," but well worth it in the end. Originally, I was going to just list the books of the Bible, but then I got creative and added chapters to each book. After that, I made a folder for each of the sections of the OT/NT, i.e,, Pentateuch, History, etc. Then I moved each book/chapter folder into the appropriate division of the OT or NT and THEN I further organized and created a folder for the OT and for the NT. Now I just click on the OT (or NT) folder which opens to the divisions, then I click on the division that I need and there are all of the books. Now it is an easy drag of the note file, clipping, etc., into the correct book and chapter. The note files, clippings, etc., are still in the master file list, but are now managed in my favorites folder.

I have watched all (or most) of Mark's videos. They are great. I do like this idea, but baulk at the thought of how time consuming it is. I wish we could share certain files: like this one, for instance. We as users of Logos could help other users and make the program even more beneficial to one another.

Any ideas - Logos staffers?

I just added some folders to my Favorites under a "super folder" for Apologetics. My folders in the super folder will be for books that I don't have in Logos 4. I just type in the notes that I've hand written from my reading into a "Note File" and then drag that note file into my folder in Favorites. I've also done the same thing by highlighting/copying something from another program and pasting that into a note file and dragging into the favorites folder(s).

The really great part about this type of a setup is that I can put the various note files/clippings files into multiple folders for topical or textual information depending on the folder. I put a passage list of Advent Scritpures into a topical file on Advent and then dragged the same passage list into the Isaiah folder and others that were referenced in the passage list. Now I've built my own cross reference guide.

They can. Just add a reference as a Tag. Note that any references in the content are also linked to the clipping.

Just curious ... how long COULD a Note file be before creating a problem of some sort? In other words, could one copy and paste a whole chapter from a book, or a small book into a Note file? If so, would there be a negative impact on any of the functionality within L4?

Don't know if any research / testing has been done on this but thought I might ask anyway. If Logos could be pushed to the limit, it would be good to know. Maybe there are no limits. That would be nice.

Not really sure, but I think there would be some copyright issues with putting any book to include small books into a Note file where you could print it and then sell it. I sometimes put several pastes from a book as I progress through it into my notes and add my commentary to the note file. Sometimes I put a quote into my notes with the (page number) beside it. Right. I was thinking about [extenuating circumstances] where one might want to have temporary access to a public domain booklet or even paste in some extensive notes from a detailed study one may have done some time past. I have begun to scour my old teachings and have put them into Notes - then filed in Favorites. So far it has worked great with NO issues whatsoever. I was just wondering if there were some kind of ceiling and what that might be. But Logos has more important projects to work on and I appreciate them staying on point because it means constant improvements.

Thanks for the reminder. I am going with this. I already created 66 folders and have moved all my Notes / Clippings that have a Scripture reference into the appropriate folder.(Aditionally, I put a Note file called: God is Light into the John folder.) I did NOT create chapter folders for every book ... yet. I decided to do that as I go. I can really see how this is going to help me to find things later. I can also put folders like: Intro / Structure / Authorship, etc. into each Book's folder so I never have to keep re-inventing the wheel every time I begin a study in that book AND so I can keep adding to these "introductory" folders as I go making them more and more useful.

Sorry Dave - probably not making myself clear enough as usual!

What I meant was: you cannot have a clipping accessible from a Bible like you can a Note.

i.e. if you add a note to a note file using the <right-click on bible verse in bible, choose "Reference", add to notes> approach - then a little coloured box appears in the bible (and other bible tagged resources like commentaries) so you can access the note from there.

You cannot do that with clippings (to make a relevant clipping accessible from say Jn 3.16 in all resources). Unless Logos added a new feature to make that possible.

The main issue to me is that Notes files are painfully slow to use once they have anything other than one-liners in them! - scrolling through longer notes for example is slooooooooooooooow!
