I just received a Mac Air--the superdrive will not arrive until later this week. Can I download my logos 4 onto my new mac air without the drive?

Yes. Once you download the basic software and install it, you'll be asked to enter your Logos account info (username & password) and then Logos 4 will do the rest. I would suggest getting started at a time when you don't need to heavily use your computer and give it a good 8-10 hours to index. Maybe right before you go to bed.
Call Customer service and they can likely help you without problem.

I just did this yesterday on my new Mac Air. I downloaded a 6 gig library last night. Indexing was done in 3 hours. And the performance blows the doors off L4 on PC [:)]

Do you find 2 gb of ram enough? I am wondering if ram is less important with a ssd since its fast to cache out??? Maybe I don't understand how it all works though...
To clarify something ( I have the white 13.3 MB with normal HDD and 2GB RAM):
From the various reports of speed issues on the forum and monitoring my own RAM usage, it doesn't appear to me that Logos is using vast amounts of ram, I always seem to have sufficient inactive memory left. It appears that the SSD makes the biggest difference, it doesn't seem like Logos even tries to load your entire library into RAM so I's see how you get on and keep an eye on how much inactive RAM there is, if it starts to consistently get low then an upgrade (can you do this with the air??) might help.

Looking at i Fix It's tear down of 11" Mac Book Air => http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/MacBook-Air-11-Inch-Model-A1370-Teardown/3745/1 appears RAM is surface mounted to logic board. If need RAM upgrade, suggest upgrading Mac Book Air (could sell or donate old one).

I'm considering upgrading my laptop SOLELY to have a better Logos experience, so I'm interested in what makes the difference between good and poor performance.
Correction: I don't have that graphics card either, could that make a big difference?

I have a new Macbook Air:
13", 2.13GHz, 4GB RAM, 256gB Flash Storage (cost was $1,799)
L4 is incredibly fast and I do not experience many of the problems that have been described in the forum.
Also, I have not loaded up this Air with too much extraneous software - keep that on my iMac.

Suspect SSD is noticeably faster - disk upgrade idea for MacBook is Seagate's Momentus XT hybrid drive - 500 GB 7200 RPM drive with 4 GB SSD.

I'm now running Logos4 on Window7 (used at work)and am planning to acquire a Mac air (to be used at home) and run a copy on the Mac air. My question is that when I do my study (with new notes, annotations, etc) on the Window7 and sync it online, will I be able to retrieve back the same latest layout on the Mac air?

Althought I use L4 on only one computer myself, my understanding is that this is the whole reason for the sync function, to enable you to utilize L4 on different computers, and even different platforms, and always have them synced. You won't even have to "sync it online". The program will do it for you automatically. Anytime you see the little arrows in the upper right corner spinning, then it is syncing your data.
So your opinion, Keep Smiling, is that the HD speed is more important than the graphics card? I've already upgraded my HD to a 300GB, but I did it for space, not for speed, so it isn't any faster than the old one. Also, can you explain how having 4GB of SSD on a 500GB drive helps performance? Is the 4GB a separate partition on the drive? In that case, it wouldn't be any different from having a flash drive in a USB port, and 4GB isn't going to help much with running L4.

Your question wasn't addressed to me, but I'll give some indications of what I understand. The harddrive itself manages the 4GB to keep regularly accessed data on it, so the system can access it quickly, in some senses it 'learns' what you need quickly and stores as much of it there as it can to speed up access. You would use it as a normal HDD, it wouldn't be an extra partition. I would guess it may mean that the first few uses wouldn't be vastly better, but might be from then on. I have a feeling you could end up with lots of OS stuff on the 4G as that's used every boot etc. so you might not improve Logos much, but this is just a hunch with no evidence whatsoever.
USB access would be bottlenecked, I think, by the IO speed of the USB system so wouldn't gove the same performance increase.
It's not a separate partition. The Momentus looks at your usage and dynamically allocates the files that will speed up your usage the most to the SSD portion, which mainly means startup files and launching files.
So no, you can't deliberately put your whole library on it, but testing shows it makes a significant difference, turning it into a high-performing HDD.

Yes - named layouts are synced and work nicely cross platform - automatically adjusts relative screen size based on resolution. In the layout menu on either platform, can right click on a named layout for pop-up menu => click Update (when ready to sync layout changes). For sync items, only know layout snapshots not included.
Suggest clicking arrows (or use "Sync Now" command) to sync information to start and end Logos usage on a computer.

Can upgrade hard disk in existing Mac Book. To upgrade graphics card, suggest selling or donating existing Mac Book and purchasing newer model.
Last year upgraded 2006 Mac Book Pro hard drive from 160 GB 5400 RPM to 320 GB 7200 RPM - noticeably faster in many applications. No one has responded yet to my question about the graphics processor and L4 performance. Is the consensus that the HD is more important than the graphics card? If I buy a new Macbook or MB Pro, what graphics capability should I get if L4 is my primary concern?
