Greek Versions appear different

This may be an easily answered question

i was studying Heb and noted that when I have NKJV and ESV up with Greek Interlinear versions then sometimes there are differences in Greek - some words do not appear in NKJV.

eg v10 "perfect" 5048 in ESV but not in NKJV

Does anyone know why this is?

Are the Greek versions different?

Appreciate any help with this

Which chapter? I believe the two translations are based on different text families. The ESV on the Critical Text and the NKJV on the Byzantine.

That's strange...

The NKJV says it's based on Scrivener's 1881 NT and it's in my Scrivener's but not in the NKJV....

Not sure what to make of this...it seems that the NA27 and scriv, and Elziver, etc...all have this word at that point.

Really appreciate the help with this guys.

I had my page just showing strongs and greek.

When i put on Interlinear - as in above post - then when clicked on 'perfect' it showed that the greek word order is different in gk manuscripts but 5048 is still there

As I'm not a Bible scholar can i ask a simple question? Are different versions of the Bible NKJV and ESV based on different Greek texts. I tend to use both versions for my study

Most certainly.

The NKJV is based on the Textus Receptus. The ESV and most other modern translation are based on the NA27 (with occasional variations).

In truth most of the differences are things like word order and variant spellings. Occassionally, the comprise things like differences of word choice or perhaps a phrase that appears in one but not the other, but not as often as you would think. The level of agreement between the various Greek texts is unparalleled by any other piece of ancient literature. All that to say that most differences of opinion do not come from variations between different Greek texts, but from varying principles of interpretation and theological constructs.

There is much to say on this topic that exceeds the bounds of this forum, but I hope this helps a little.

Gary.. I took a Hermeneutics class last year with a Greek Prof who gave us a greek commercial every day of the class. Now not all degrees in my school require Greek or Hebrew, but my degree does. In the greek manuscripts he said we have a ton of differences over the years. There are no longer original autographs, but copies of copies and the earliest copy is probably closest to the original autographs. Now that being said, there are differences in the copies we find. They are minor and do not really account for any major doctrinal change. The problem comes when we find the issue of such things as the trinitarian forumula argument (see 1 John 5:7-8 in the KJV and ESV). Most early greek manuscripts do not contain the formula found in the KJV. Now, Jesus teaches the trinity formula and it is a major doctrine of the church. So, do we deny the trinity? Certainly not, but I say that formula was added to the KJV based on a later manuscript that some scribe added in. Earlier manuscripts have it absent. Check out your greek manuscripts in your library and you will see differences with them by a text comparison, but they are minor like accents or such. The current translations use different greek manuscripts.. some earlier in time than others and that is where the problem lies.

The passage Heb 2:10 has the same Greek text except for the first word being slightly different in Scrivener vs. NA27 (see Text Comparison). The last word in the Greek (#25 = G5048) is translated "make perfect" but those words are separated in the translations and differently attributed to #25 and G5048! The confusion arises from the Interlinear attribution and not the Greek text.
