Proximity Searching

What's up with proximity searching?  Sometimes it seems to work well and at others, not at all! 

Trying to search a specific resource using "x within 10 words y"  turns up the same number of hits as all of the other methods.  For example "x Before 10 words y" or "x near y" and several others including substituting "characters" for 'words"  - every time the same nuber of hits were obtained!

any suggestions?

Can you be more specific about the search you were doing and against which resource?

Trying to reproduce this I searched in the KJV for "light" and "life"

• "light NEAR life" produced 8 results
• "light WITHIN 10 WORDS life" produced the same 8 results
• "light WITHIN 3 WORDS life" produced 4 results (the correct subset)
• "light WITHIN 10 CHARACTERS life" produced 3 results (the correct subset of the previous set of the first set of results)
