Testing the Scheduled Updates feature

It seems to me that we beta testers should test the scheduled updates feature to ensure it works correctly and that it works across time zones.

Let me suggest that all of us beta testers set set this to a time when we'll know whether it works or not. Since I'm in the same time zone as the Logos office, I can't test that part of the equation.

Any takers from other time zones?

Also, it would be helpful if Logos would announce to us that an update is scheduled, so we can watch for it, and confirm that this function works.

Good idea.

I have set up my system - in the UK - to allow downloads between 6 and 10am.

While I think the addition of this feature is great I think that there will be a request that it be extended to allow selection of "allowable days" as well. I know that a lot of people have struggled with getting updates as they are getting nearer to deadlines for Sunday sermons.

You're right, I'm sure.

If this feature could be run through the Windows Task Scheduler, folks could edit the settings any way they wished (provided they knew how to do so - instructions could be detailed in the Wiki).

IMHO this changes the intent of the feature. It is meant to control the timing of the downloading of the data, to help with people who have internet connections needing to do so. For the pastor who wants to defer actually doing the update, you can always just keep clicking "no" don't do the update when you start Logos, until you are ready to do the install. Or turn off, "No", Automatically download updates when they don't want to see them at all. Seems like there choices for this new requirement (again the feature is to control ISP/network data usage) and we don't need yet another?

Isn't the issue that people have with internet connections that they are normally capped on a monthly basis? If so, I'm not sure how much allowing scheduling at different times of the day will help. I may be misunderstanding what issue this feature is actually designed to address.

Some accounts might come with peak and off-peak usage caps. This feature would by handy for people like that.

Also I'm not sure if they've addressed the issue that people wanted to be told up front before they accepted a download how big it was going to be. Scheduling the automatic downloads won't help with this.

I let it run as scheduled and, though I had to step out while it downloaded, when I returned a few hours later, everything had downloaded, and the notification icon was gone. When I restarted Logos I got the message about preparing the library, and expected that to be followed by some indexing. But there wasn't any. (!)

Now, it would be really, really cool if the scheduled update also started the indexing routine, since this would make this function even more useful and attractive. After all, it's not the downloading that slows down the computer so much as the indexing.

But what I don't know is whether the scheduled update routine also indexes the new resources, or whether the patching system doesn't require indexing. (Either answer is a good one!)

Does anyone know?

The Indexer will automatically enter the discovery and indexing phase (once a download has completed) if Logos 4 isn't running. (This has been the case for quite some time; it hasn't changed with the introduction of download scheduling and patching.)

I guess I never downloaded things without Logos running before, so didn't know this.

Still, it's pretty cool to have the indexing done when I'm not using the computer.

I scheduled a download of a previously hidden resource and it went as expected:

was notified download would occur as scheduled ie. it works for GMT+10 timezone!
changed time so it would happen immediately
resource downloaded and indexed with L4 closed.
