The first thing I did after I saw the suggestion for testing the memory in the Blue Screen of Death was to download a RAM tester and test the OptiPlex 745 computer's memory. I ran the battery of tests for about 15 hours and it completed 13 passes in that time with zero errors.

I haven't run any other diagnostics, but I suppose I should look into that.

I will also look into upgrading any drivers per your suggestion - and thank you for the links to the Dell Drivers and Download page.

On it's own, software can't cause a BSOD. BSODs are always hardware or driver issues (although buggy software can create a set of conditions that means faulty hardware/drivers causes a BSOD). So, KS4J's advice to update drivers is good advice.

I think you mentioned on another thread that this computer is recently upgraded, but it looks from your specs that your HDD is the same. Actually, this case, motherboard, memory, hard drive and power supply are all "new" (or as a car salesman in MA calls it: "NEW TO YOU!" [;)] [;)] ) I upgraded the 80GB disk that came with the configuration to a 160GB disk because I didn't want to get a smaller hard drive, when I actually need something bigger! [8-)]

But I am going to check out the drivers on the Dell download page. I am comfortable with upgrading drivers - but I am definitely NOT comfortable with the idea of upgrading BIOS firmware - because that is a process that can't be "rolled back!" [:|]

Well, I had some high hopes there for a while! I was doing the Driver and BIOS upgrades / updates and the BIOS went from version 2.0.8 to 2.6.4 - it seemed like quite a jump although I'm not sure how the number is incremented. Anyway, most of the other updates that I did were already done previously except for one or two besides the big BIOS update!

While I was on the Dell download site, I also downloaded the Dell System diagnostic. It works like the memory test that I spoke about previously (or it might have been in another thread!) You burn an image file onto a bootable CD and the tests run. I haven't figured out yet how to loop the tests.

Anyway, as I said, I had high hopes because of the substantial improvement of the BIOS. BUT - when I tried Logos 4 - it still crashed with the same 7F STOP code.

So now I am running the Dell System Diagnostics. I hope I get something tangible from the tests that could lead to a fix.

So sorry to hear you are having problems. Updating the drivers as suggested is definitely good advice. Also, if you want a memory test that you can loop then go to www.memtest86.com and download the memory diagnostic located there. It is an image file that you burn to a bootable cd. Memtest86 has found bad memory sticks for me several times in the past. Best of all it is FREE.

In my 25+ years of building and servicing computers the most common causes of BSOD (in order) have been video drivers, other drivers, overheating, bad memory, bad hard drives, and recent updates to the OS from Microsoft. On a couple of occasions just reseating the memory sticks have solved the problem.

I hope you get the issue resolved. Logoa 4 is an excellent package and well worth the time it takes to get it running properly.

[:S] My system uses 4 - 1GB memory sticks and all were listed as being 667 MHz, and that is within the specs for an OptiPlex 745.

This list is very helpful - thanks! I have updated the video drivers for the integrated graphics (I have a Radeon x1300 Video Card that I haven't installed yet because I've gotten this BSOD error - one less thing to troubleshoot at this point!); other drivers (such as integrated audio drivers), regarding overheating - I am currently running the Dell System Diagnostics, and there is a feature to run tests specific to the error that you are getting. So, I first ran the memory tests (Pass) and then I ran the extended tests (Pass) and now I've looped through the tests that are specific to the BSOD failure (Passed three times through this one so far) Some of these specific tests are: [overheating] - CPU fan (Hi/Lo) Case fan (Hi/Lo) - (Pass); [memory] - regular RAM plus - L1 and L2 cache, passing data between the two CPUs, etc (Pass) ; [bad hard drives] there are extensive tests for the disk drive: reading, idling, standby, seeking, long test and a verify test - all of these just passed for the third loop through; and recent updates for the OS - I've downloaded all of the most recent updates from the Microsoft Update website.

As far as reseating the memory sticks, I haven't opened up the case yet, but I'm not getting any memory errors.

At this point, I don't have any indicators of what the problem might be! [8-)] [*-)]

At this point, I don't have any indicators of what the problem might be!

About three years ago I was troubleshooting a Dell system that my son had given me for parts. The system was only two years old but had been hit by a power surge. He had spent several days on the phone with Dell Tech Support swapping parts and getiing nowhere. He bought a new system and gave the old one to me. After trying a different CPU, hard drive, memory and optical drives I was no further ahead than he had been. To make a long story short, the symptoms were that an OS reinstall would hang about halfway through and never complete. I tried Windows XP and Vista with the same results. When WIndows 7 came out I tried it also to no avail. Running the Dell and mem86 diagnostics showed everything was okay. But Windows never would completely install. So just for fun I tried Ubuntu Linux and it installed without a hitch. The system is currently running Ubuntu 10.10 and working just fine as a file server. A couple of months ago, just for kicks I swapped hard drives and tried a Windows 7 install again but same story. So I put the Ubuntu drive back in a chalked it up to an unsolvable mystery. My best guess is something on the motherboard was damaged. Whatever it is Ubuntu doesn't use it or need it but WIndows does.

I guess my point in all of this is to say that sometimes the answer is just totally elusive even to the best diagnostics and technician. I hope that isn't the case with your problem but be prepared for the worst. [:(]

If all else fails have you considered an upgrade to Windows 7? Seems to be much more stable with Logos 4.

It was tough trying to balance all the factors so that I would end up with a computer that was enough of a (baby??) step up - to hopefully run Logos 4 reasonably well and concentrate my financial resources on the hardware without devoting any of it to the OS. It is highly unlikely that it is even the barest glimmer of an issue. Though not unheard of. Most modern computers can adequately deal with whatever variance there might be in MFR's and personally I can't even ve certain that Samsung and Micron aren't coming off the same assembly line somewhere. (haven't checked it.)

A couple of options that you might consider at this point, though they may be time consuming and/or drastic.... and they unfortunately come with no guarantees.

1. run a chkdsk /v /r from the commandline which will require you to reboot your system and let the OS scan the HD for physical issues that might contribute to odd problems. It has happened to me on at least two occasions that this solved the issues I was having.

2. uninstall L4, Move the resource folder elsewhere and do a complete reinstall from scratch, big download, long index, the whole schmeal.

Either or both of these could take hours.

I agree with Thomas. Though not unheard of, memory problems due to different manufacturers are most likely not the cause here since you have run two different diagnostics and not turned up any memory errors. You can answer it once and for all by removing two of the memory sticks and running with matched modules. If the error disappears then you have found the culprit.

Upgrading to WIndows 7 would be my last choice and a last resort. I only mentioned it in that context. I agree with Thomas and am leaning toward the graphics chipset. If Dell followed their standard practice they most likely used an Intel motherboard and chipset. I have three such motherboards (my home system, my wife's and my office system) and two of them gave me stability issues with Logos 4 until I upgraded to deiscrete adaptors. I didn't install Logos 4 on my wife's system but she uses some other graphics intensive packages that kept crashing the system until I installed a discrete card. Do I remember you saying you have a card but haven't tried it yet?

I did add a printer driver for my Epson Artisan 50 right from Epson, but if I remember correctly, I got the BSOD even before I installed the Epson printer driver.

I do have a separate video card that I haven't installed yet because I didn't want to complicate the troubleshooting. I was going to add the video card AFTER I was sure everything was OK with the PC. However, I realize the value of disabling the integrated video chips and using the video card. That would at least tell us if the integrated video was bad - which would mean a motherboard problem. I purchased a Dell dual monitor ATI Radeon x1300 256MB PCI-e video card. I am hesitant to install it because I don't want to damage the video card and I more importantly don't want to be troubleshooting two problems.

But I suppose I am familiar enough with the "undetermined" BSOD failure to hopefully distinguish it from any problems with the video card. At this point, it might at least produce something tangible to report back to the person from whom I bought the computer.

Good question! I noticed that I the BSOD has happened under different circumstances. I have saved a "Layout" that keeps my place in about six Resources on a related topic. I opened that layout - without even opening any of the individual Resources beyond what is saved in the layout - and I got the BSOD within a second or two of opening that layout.

Be careful of static electric shock(s) - humans can feel shock(s) above 2,000 volts - smaller amounts can damage electronic components.

Personally have learned to disconnect power, then touch metal parts of case and power supply - careful about not generating static with my feet.

Great advice, thanks! I used to have a static strap that you would wear like a bracelet and the other end connects with an alligator clip to the chassis to short any static electricity to ground. I have no idea where that is - or my tools for that matter! [:|] This ought to be fun! [;)]

When I first read "please be careful handling stuff", I immediately thought you were referring to not touching the gold fingers on the slot connectors, or perhaps not touching any pins on the chips. When I read about the "small blood sacrifices" - I got quite a chuckle! [:D] ... "Been there ... Done that!" [;)]

Somewhere along the course of these great suggestions in this thread (maybe in the documentation on the referred pages), I read about interpreting the "Dump Codes" from the BSOD and needing a Debugger program from Microsoft. So I am in the process of downloading that to see if it will shed some light on what the status of the computer was when it crashed. And of course, to use the Debugger - I also had to download ".NET Frameworks 4" or something ... so this process is taking forever! It's a good thing that I don't require too much sleep [|-)]

The next step for you might be to try the component manufacturer's drivers. They're likely to be more up-to-date than Dell's own. Certainly I'd try that with chipset and graphics drivers.

Thanks so much for the suggestion. I went to the Intel site to look into the chipset upgrade, and the website said that the chipset is customized (by Dell) and therefore can't be upgraded by Intel. Also - at this point, I've removed two of the four memory sticks, including one Samsung and the only Micron memory stick. I packed everything up again (boy - was that easy with the OptiPlex line. Even with the Small Form Factor - even though everything is tight it was still easy to do! [Y]

I ran the memory test for one pass through the set of memory tests and the memory passed. Next I started up Logos 4 and went to that Layout with the 6 related Resources -- and I STILL got the BSOD!!! [:@]

Now I don't know whether I should switch the two memory sticks over to the newly vacated memory slots to verify that it's not a motherboard connection between the memory slots - OR - skip that step and go right to disabling the on-board video chipset and inserting the discreet video card?

Video card installation with vendor's graphics drivers seems appropriate (optionally install all memory sticks).

I installed the memory sticks that I had removed, so now I'm back to 4Gigs of RAM and I installed the ATI Radeon x1300 video card - although finding the drivers for it was quite difficult. I finally contacted the guy who I bought it from and he helped me get the drivers for it. I'm still a bit unsettled about the driver for the video card though, because I got a couple of errors during the install, but the system sees it and registers the memory on it correctly and it appears to work correctly, so at this point, since I'm running on a sleep deficit, I'm going to leave things as they are.

When I started up Logos 4, it began to download some updates and while it was doing that, I went for broke and loaded the layout with the 6 Resources - and - it did NOT crash! [:O] No BSOD! [Y] [:D] [Y] I didn't test if further by opening one of the resources in that layout, because I didn't want to crash the update.

Then, it started indexing - so I decided to leave it alone for a couple of hours while it indexes, and I'm going to go take a nap. [:)] I think I've earned it [:|] [|-)]

So many thanks to all for the tremendous help, and although I remain GUARDEDLY OPTIMISTIC at this point, I am hopeful that the video card has helped a great deal. I'll know more after I get a chance to really exercise (or is that EXORCISE!) [;)] Logos 4 and the hardware after it finishes indexing and after my nap.

AMD bought ATI some imte ago, wondering about ATI Catalyst legacy driver 10.2 - released Feb 23, 2010 (link posted earlier in this thread):

This was one of the confusing things for me - that I was looking for a video driver and a CPU chip manufacturer company's page came up. I did eventually figure out that AMD must have bought out ATI, but it was very confusing to me at first.

What happened was, when I got to the above page, I saw that the ATI Radeon x1300 video card was listed as having been moved to a "Legacy" site (which I couldn't find) because it was no longer supported - or so I thought. I never dreamed that a recent video driver would work on an old, unsupported video card.

That driver is eventually what I ended up installing though. So thank you for being a step ahead of me (even though I was too tired to see that!)

I have to go back to testing the Logos 4 software installation to verify that the BSOD is indeed gone. I'll post here when I am reasonably sure. [:^)]
