How does Gold work on MacBook Air?

Hey, all you guys who understand tech stuff! I am looking at the new MacBook Air with 2.13 Ghz, 4 GB RAM and 256 GB flash storage. I am wondering if it will run Logos 4 efficiently. If not, I was wondering if it is easy and functional to have Logos all in an external HD and run it from that when I need it. I do not use it every day. I hear that the flash drive is incredible and just seeing if anybody has any info or, better yet, experience with it.
Any ideas or thoughts?

From a technical point of view you should have no problems - indeed the SSD should give good speed benefits. 256Gb is not a huge amount of storage, but Logos will probably be less than 10Gb. The biggest limitation in my view of the MacBook Air would be screen size but each to their own (I have two 21" screens so I can have lots of books open at the same time).

You might take a look at this thread http://community.logos.com/forums/p/25545/190617.aspx#190617 started by Kevin Purcell, a Windows diehard who has purchased an iPad and an MBA. He even made a video of his experience. I'm not sure that he had SSD which would make a difference in speed of operation.

With 256 GB of flash storage, suggest installing Logos 4 Mac internally - estimating 10 to 12 GB of storage (resources + indexes + user files) => http://www.logos.com/mac/support/systemrequirements (good idea to keep several GB free for temporary files)
For Logos 4 Mac experiences using MacBook Air, suggest reading forums http://community.logos.com/forums/t/29568.aspx and http://community.logos.com/forums/t/24898.aspx plus Kevin Purcell's blog => http://www.kevinpurcell.org/

MacBook Air has 2 USB ports - can boot Mac OS X from external drive - turn on Mac - hold down option key until Mac shows bootable partitions - release option key - choose desired partition (mouse click or arrow key then enter).
Personally have an external 2 TB drive with couple Mac OS X bootable partitions - have used to boot 3 different models: 2006 MacBook Pro and couple iMac's (2007 and 2009). While external USB is slower than internal storage, Logos 4 Mac is usable.
Thankful for Logos 4.2a Beta 6 performance improvements - scrolling a resource linked to two more along with visual highlighting responds well with mouse wheel movement (and arrow keys) - external USB drive on 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac (2007).

Due to size constraints, current MacBook Air models only has SSD (64 GB, 128 GB, or 256 GB) => http://www.apple.com/macbookair/specs.html

Thanks for the correct information. I don't have an MBA (laptop or degree [8-|]).

Other World Computing just released new, larger SSD drives which you can install in MacBook Air computers. I think the new SSD drives go up to 480 GB.

Thanks, all! These have been incredibly helpful. It sounds like LOGOS will run well on the MBA. I appreciate further thoughts. My thinking so far is that I think that the MBA will perform all that I need it to do. I could go up a notch and get a MBP, which is what I have (2008). If I go MBP I think I need to wait until the new ones are heralded, to see what is up. Yet, not sure I need all the computing that I have in the MBP. I do have a concern with the screen size in the MBA, but most of what I do, other than LOGOS, is word processing, which you can increase the font or zoom. I guess I'm rambling a bit. My big loves of the MBP is the backlit keyboard, size of screen....but yet I'm very eager to slim down, lighten the weight, and get down to what I really need rather than overdoing it. There is little chance of me getting into anything heavier duty than LOGOS. I could buy large and prepare for the chance , but.... On the other hand, it's not that much more $ for the MBP over the Air.
Random thoughts....

Suggest visiting an Apple Store - try out screen sizes and keyboards => http://www.apple.com/retail/storelist/

I doubt Gold would be an issue on Air. If you want a MacBook Pro wait until the new models hit this spring. I like larger screens myself so I can understand where you are coming from.

The other thing you could do would be to switch your MBP screen resolution to that of the MBA for a little while, and see how you get on. If you don't miss the extra real-estate, you'll know an MBA would be fine for you.

I never thought of that! I think I'll try that and see what happens. Thanks, Mark!

The resolutions don't match perfectly, as far as the numbers show, but I think that if one uses a little math and screen size extrapolation, they are identical and just about what I have on my MBP. Great idea!

Mark,
I currently have a MacBook Air 13" 4GB RAM late 2010 model. I have had no problems with the Silver version of Logos on it. just fyi.

Thanks, all! The decision has been made....I will get the 13" MBA, max out processor and RAM and go for it!
