feature to select verses from a search/concordance
I often do concordance work, or use the Englishman's feature, and know of no easy way to select verses and put them into a verse list. For instance, if I am doing a search on "Father" in John's Gospel, and find 12 verses out of the 60 or 70 possible verses, I would love to "select" the 12 I want to export to a verse list. (like having a check box by each verse).
Anybody "feel me" on that one?

Without trying this myself try highlighting and copying the verse you want in your verse list then in the verse list window select "Add" and "From Clipboard". Is This what you were looking for?

I agree with you, having a check box next to the verses would be quite helpful. The copy and paste method works, but can become tedious.

I agree that a checkbox would be nice.
However, I do this a lot - just clikndrag to select the whole group, then all in one step paste it into a verselist.
It's easy to delete the ones you don't want from the verselist - and it provides several formats for display a well.=============

I'm not sure it would be quicker for me with check boxes, though it would allow you to deselect some. It seems this would be just as quick to simply delete them from the verse list after you have them in there.

Hi, first, CTL + A just highlights all, correct? But if you want 12 out of 120 options, that doesn't work well, right? Second, I am just curious: do you build your powerpoint before your word doc? How does building a word doc of verses from your powerpoint help? I am just intrigued by the idea, but don't really understand how you use it. thanks for your tips, however!

it seems that using the englishman's, you can't copy to clipboard, you can only copy one verse at a time, and it is tedious to copy exactly that verse. There are some other issues i have with englishman's and with verse list, but I can't remember them right now. (SO, why bring it up???

One click per unwanted verse. (Delete key)
You've got to read the verse anyway to decide if you want it.
You would likely press the downarrow key to do this.
The number of keystrokes is almost identical.

Here is the procedure, step by step:
1. right click on desired word in Bible and select Englishman's concordance search.
2. at the top of the resulting list, just to the left of the first letter of the first reference, click your mouse and DRAG down and to the right to highlight as much of the list as you want, then click Ctrl+C to copy that selection into the Clipboard
3. File > new > verselist and type a name, then click Add > from clipboard
4. Select style > References and text in two columns
5. Move down the list, one verse at a time. If you like the verse, press the downarrow to the next verse. If you don't like it, press the delete key and the verse goes away and the next verse is automatically highlighted.
6. You can use Shift-Click to define a range, or Ctl-Click to add/remove specific verses to/from a selected range, before pressing delete, if you prefer.
7. FINAL RESULT has a very flexible format ... you can copy just the references, or the text, or both, from any one or two translations.
This process goes VERY quickly.

Powerpoint has a "publish slide outline to Word Doc" option. I do not like putting the text of the verse on the slide but i do like putting the reference on the slide so I don't have to state the reference 10 times, and people can quickly come back after zoning :-) come on, we've all done it. by exporting it to word and then telling logos to pull the references from the word doc I am able to get an ordered list of the references I will be using throughout the sermon. by having them listed I'm able to collect my thoughts by reading the verse while people turn to the reference rather then spending the time turning there myself. Also if there is a verse I just want to reference rather then have the congregation turn to I can hit it quicker. Hope that answers your question.
Yes, CTL A selects everything. With wanting 12 out of 120 I would simply highlight the ones I want.

I get it (and chuckled at the first part) mostly. Sounds like you have a seperate sheet of just your verses when you preach? I usually just print my verses within my "manuscript" (which is combination manuscript and outline, but I don't woodenly read it) and read off of that. I copy and paste them to the powerpoint. Incidentally, yeah, I agree that having the text reference only is a good idea. I haven't done it that way yet. I have either announced "turn to . . . " or I have powerpointed the actual text. Lately it has been the former, as I want people leafing through their Bibles. Only time that doesn't work as well is if I find a particular translation has expressed the text more how I think it should read and that translation is different from what the majority of the people use (usually combo of NIV/KJV is used)

I just put at the top of the slide "Current verse: ..." and then the points I'm working on under that. I do not use a printed manuscript or even another outline outside of the Powerpoint slides. I found when I did that I became way too wooden and dependent upon them. If I need a reminder note I put it on the notes section of the slide and have Powerpoint in Presentation mode so that I can see my notes and slide during the sermon but the congregation only sees the slide.

I've been noting how many indicate that they use Powerpoint or attend where it is used. Not to get too critical since this is a personal matter, it seems to me that Powerpoint detracts from the service (also, I would never take a computer to church unless it was to a meeting outside the Nave). I have a very good friend who is a Fundy, and I've attended his church where they use Powerpoint a number of times. It just doesn't seem right. I wouldn't walk out of a church because they use Powerpoint, but I might not return. Am I the only one who feels this way? I suppose I'm just an old fogey -- at 38 too!

To each his own. There are definitely negatives that can come from using PowerPoint, but there are many positives as well. I think where many people go wrong is when Powerpoint is used to make the sermon more entertaining. It will never work for that. I think Powerpoint needs to be such that it is easily ignorable until a situation e.g. not hearing or forgetting the reference that was given.

I have read about studies indicating as much. As for my own habits, I don't always use PPT. Sometimes by design, other times because I ran out of time. I don't think it is unbiblical to use it. I have even read the Bible from my PDA, though far less than my pre-printed Word doc, and I almost always have some Bible in the pulpit with me.
The distraction comes, in part, from having too much on the screen that people focus on it, and might miss what is preached (to be truthful, as Spitzer said, people weave in and out anyway! [:)]). I have done some sermons with only images on the PPT to evoke a particular focal point or mood. At other times I have used a chart if I thought it was needed in a more "teaching" type of sermon in a text that needs some explaining and comparison. I have also used it to show translations that people don't use: seeing and hearing increase retention. I have also tried simple bullet points of my main headings just to keep the progression. They all work, and don't work, for people, depending on their personal preference. My wife like 1,2, 3 outlines with fill in the blank sheets. Others prefer to have a more rambling narrative. You guys know how that goes.
Yeah, this is off topic, but I think my suggestion/question was handled within the first few posts and I find it a pain to start another thread. George, interesting viewpoint. Some of my best sermons, I think, were with NO powerpoint. But my wife still prefers a well done one (and SHE is the one who pointed me to the study on teh perils of powerpoint). I am still working out my style. I have only preached full time for 4 years. And sometimes it seems the text kind of dictates the style I need to take.I like Apples. Especially Honeycrisp.

I am sorry George to disappoint you... I preach from my notebook and yes, we usually have a background picture on the screen underlining the subject of the sermon [:)]
Now, before you switch me off, just to explain: I use my laptop since I found I am not able to read my notes (I am 50). I can read easily the screen on the laptop. I stopped however to show the Bible texts for the church, I like them to use their Bibles, if that helps me to get at least some points with you... [H]
