How to define collection of "older" resources

I'm trying to create a collection of older resources, as I want to do some searching in books / articles from before the year 1800. So far, I've got this filter:

pubdate:<1800 OR title:Nicene OR (author:Bunyan OR author:Calvin)

Pubdate is essentially useless, as most of the older resources have publication dates around their most recent printings or when they were released in electronic format. As an aside, an "original publication date" metadata on resources would be enormously useful!

Other than continuing to add specific authors I happen to know are from before 1800, does anyone have ideas or filters that would help me create this collection?

Tagging is another option. Tag resources that you come across which are old with some unique tag (not simply "Old" since that would pick up all kinds of "Old Testament" stuff, or would limit you to not being able to use your Tags field for that). Something like OldBook perhaps.

That won't help you with articles that are old, however probably any resources that have old articles in them would be entirely made up of old articles (e.g., Sword and Trowel) so you could tag each entire volume as an OldBook.

This is only a workaround for a problem where Logos doesn't have a field for the original publication date of a work. They really should. We shouldn't be having to manually do this kind of stuff. Grumble, grumble.

One way would be to search your library by authors you know lived before this time, select multiple entries and tag them in a way that makes sense to you (e.g. PRE1800). After going through your authors, create a collection filter based on your tags (e.g. mytag:PRE1800).

Then if you find something you forgot to add, or buy a new resource, tag it with your tag name and the collection will automatically update.

I've used this method for creating other collections as well (Exegetical Commentary collection, as well as Application and Homiletical commentary collections). I just have to remember to tag the new resources when I get them.

I'm in the habit of applying tags when I get new resources. This could be another one for material going forward. I'd probably do it by century so I can make collections for any century. That sure seems like a lot of work.

But I've got 2K+ existing resources I'd need to tag (or at least to wade through and selectively tag). Unfortunately, I don't know the dates of obscure authors - Calvin, et al, are obvious.

Concur pubdate is inconsistent since pubdate:16 finds one John Bunyan resource while author:bunyan finds many more (in one resource found date in advertisement by editor - 1688).

Near preface may be date information; also Logos web site may include date in resource description.

Appears "The Text of the Earliest New Testament Greek Manuscripts" has date ranges for individual manuscripts (whose pubdate is 2001 - matches electronic publication)

You're right that pubdate is essential useless as it's not sufficiently reliable, and authors or perhaps series are the only other options, supplemented by tags where appropriate.

The only other thing I can think of that would help would be to do a search for common but old-fashioned words, and then sort by count. Then add the authors of those works into your query. Not foolproof, and not quick, but perhaps helpful. I tried 'saith', 'beareth', 'addeth', and similar words. One negative is that it also finds resources that quote the AV a lot!
