Can some one tell me the purpose of these searches?

The top one ("New reference range") is the only one required. You can type in any valid reference range in there. Any of these would be accepted:
Genesis
Gen 1-3
Gen 1:1-2:3
Gen-Exod
Gen 30-Ex 4
And so on...
The bottom one ("Range title") is an optional name you might want to give the range. This is only interesting for ranges that have common names, such as Pentateuch. You'd put the range Genesis-Deuteronomy in the top box and the name for the range (Pentateuch) in the bottom box, and then you could refer to this range by its name as a shorthand. Both will show up in the menu. The name first, and the range it stands for in parentheses afterwards.

The top one is the range you want to search.
The bottom one is the name you want to give to that range.
For example you could put "John, 1John-3John, Revelation" as a range, and "Johanine Literature" as a name for the search range. Or you could create a range of "Psalm 120-130" and name it "Psalms of Ascent."
You would do this to do specialized studies of some kind (especially word studies, syntax searches, etc.), on particular ranges of Biblical literature.
EDIT: I see Rosie (the prolific poster) posted hers as I was still writing, but I'll leave mine up anyway as a second way of saying the same thing (although I did illustrate a non-contiguous search range, which Rosie didn't).
