4.2a Release Candidate 1 (v4.21.5.0550) available

4.2a Release Candidate 1 (v4.21.5.0550) is now available for download. An RC is considered a stable version.
To upgrade to 4.2a RC 1 now, enter the Update now command if you’ve switched to the beta channel before, or enter the Set Update Channel to beta command if you have a stable version installed (such as 4.2 SR-2). Note that since this version is an RC, it will change your default update channel to stable. This means that if we were to ship an RC 2, you wouldn’t get RC 2 automatically, you’d need to switch your update channel to beta or install from the URL below. (RC 2 would then set the default channel back to stable.)
In Logos 4.2a you will be able to:
- See a list of recently updated resources on the Home Page with links to each resource.
- See the latest software update version on the Home Page with a link to the release notes.
- View Basic Search results by Count, in addtion to Rank and Title.
- View a list of Illustration resources in the newly added Illustration section of the Passage Guide, with links to the corresponding articles.
To install 4.2a RC 1 from scratch, click here: http://downloads.logos.com/LBS4/InstallerBeta/Logos4Setup.exe.
For Release Notes, see http://wiki.logos.com/Logos_4.2a_RC_1.
See the 4.2a Beta Release Notes for more information on new features and bug fixes.

A few additions are needed:
- A full re-index will automatically be performed due to changes in the index format.
- The New Resources section will disappear from Basic Search as updates to the Library Index are now automatically merged by the Indexer (the Bible Index has been merged for some time).
- Download Scheduling (permissible times) can be set with Automatically Download Updates = Yes
- You can now Search by Large Text as a stop gap for Topics

Yay! Time to start looking forward to 4.3 Beta 1. [:)]

I think I had the full reindex in the last beta not the RC ... it would be unusual for it not to have been done in a beta first.

4.2b or not 4.2b, that is the question. All I care about is whether it has PBB with it. And vocab lists would be pretty nice, too. And all the things I've voted for on UserVoice, too. And while they're at it, the things I would have voted for if I had any votes left. Oh, and why not the things I posted on the Suggestions forum but haven't had a chance to put on UserVoice yet because I don't have any votes left. And might as well throw in some of the suggestions that other people have made that I've posted thumbs-up to.
Well, if they do all that, they're gonna have to call it 5.0. So I'd be happy with a 4.2b, but am kinda praying for a 4.3...

While we are waiting for this, I am curious...
I never used or even learned how to use PBB in Libronix. Many of you have been begging for it, which tells me it was very useful for at least some folks.
What did you actually do with it in practical terms?

Kind of gives me the feeling still that PBB is farther than nearer to completion.Bob Pritchett said:We are actively working on it, but I can't promise a particular date yet.

I only bought PBB for Libronix after L4 came out, just to play with it and see what it was like, but I saw the potential immediately and got excited about it. I just didn't want to spend a lot of time creating PBB books in L3 since I wasn't sure they'd work in L4.
I envision using it to get public domain works that I have access to in plain text form all nicely formatted and readable and searchable in my Logos library system, including links to other works in my library. Yes, I know it would be a bit of work for me to get it done, but I enjoy that kind of work. Also there's a large community of Logos users who are willing to donate time to work on other books, and we'll be able to share our work amongst ourselves. That sharing bit might not be available in the first iteration of PBB for L4, but they've promised it will be coming.

Hi Melissa:
I thought I was pretty up on "Logos speakease" but I guess I'm not. In the past if we had automatic updates turned on an update would just download in the middle of our study or when we open the program or whenever.
In this case, does "now available" mean my Logos will grab this, or that I have to manually reset as instructed above to "Set Update Channel to beta?"
Please...help me understand. For example: is this a different kind of update than the one's were used to getting "automatically?"
Thanks!

This version is still in a testing phase, but is considered "almost ready". You can go ahead and download it using the method Melissa described, or you can wait a little longer until the version is considered "ready" and at that point it will automatically download without you having to do anything.

Any chance the Notes duplication/replication problem will be fixed in this release? I'd love to be able to use L4 with Internet ON and not worry about all those duplications/replications of Notes!

Development is still working on the sync process for Notes. See Bradley's post here: http://community.logos.com/forums/p/30072/222640.aspx#222640.

Thanks Melissa . . . seems like it's a wait and see situation. Meantime, back at the ranch, I'll just continue to work Offline and only Sync when everything is closed!

Logos 3 had a number of XML documents you could manually create and use to do things like parallel passages. With Logos 4, those became regular resources that are not user creatable. Presumable PBB will allow this. I hope. Most of the ones I created are included in Logos these days, but I have one that isn't (see http://www.jeff-jackson.com) and would like to do some others, like for the Apostolic Fathers, as well as update my Old Testament Synopsis to include citations to Context of Scripture and make the ANET citations in it be hot links.

Ok, it's 10pm EST and I've been trying the "Update now" command through out the day and nothing. Is this an actual update like the ones we get every time L4 starts downloading something or is it just a beta that those who like to test beta can download and is not for everybody?
Thank you!
Douglas

An RC is automatically downloaded only on the beta channel. However, the assumption is that the RC will "go gold" i.e. become the next stable version. When it does it will download automatically or with the "update now". Many people who don't want to test beta versions do want the RC's. I believe Melissa gave directions on how to get the RC.
Orthodox Bishop Alfeyev: "To be a theologian means to have experience of a personal encounter with God through prayer and worship."; Orthodox proverb: "We know where the Church is, we do not know where it is not."

Douglas it is like a beta, only more stable. If no bugs are found, then it goes "gold" and will auto download. Release candidates are considered safe to install. If you want to install it, click the link at the beginning of the thread.

If you are not on the beta channel, then "update now" will not give you the release candidate. It is not yet technically the released version of 4.2a so if you wait until they call it the "gold" release (and they'll announce that) then it should come to you. Or they might find a bug in it and release another release candidate (RC2) before going gold. If you can't wait and want this release candidate (which is probably pretty stable and may very well end up being identical to the gold release assuming all goes well), you can follow Melissa's instructions in the first post on this thread:

I find that isn't entirely clear. If you want this RC but don't want to switch permanently to the beta channel, you can either:
Run the set update channel to beta command, then update now, the RC1 should download, then after it installs and you run it set update channel to stable to get back off the beta channel. This will mean you won't automatically get RC2 if there is an RC2, but you can follow this procedure again to get it if there is one.

Thanks guys and girls!
I think I'd rather wait for the "GR" "Gold Release" -- I'm patience enough to wait. Plus, don't want to go through all the steps and mess something up; especially since I'm not a computer savvy...[8-|]
