HALOT vs. A Concise HALOT? Analytical Key to the OT?

Does anyone have any opinion as to whether or not to purchase the full HALOT (http://www.logos.com/product/5226/hebrew-and-aramaic-lexicon-of-the-old-testament or the Concise HALOT (http://www.logos.com/product/7850/a-concise-hebrew-and-aramaic-lexicon-of-the-old-testament) ?

I'm a pastor who uses the original languages for word studies and am honing my skills. I'm teaching a baby Greek SS class and in the future a baby Hebrew class, Lord willing. However, I'm not into scholarly research and and just wondering if the HALOT is too much information that is not needed for me. It's about $125 more than the concise one and I'm not sure. Is it like the Little Kittle (Abridged TDNT) and the Big Kittle (TDNT)? I like the Lexham Discourse and HD resources so that will save me a lot of time. However, I'm not sure what the HALOT looks like inside.

Second, with the lexham resources, I don't think I need the Analytical Key to the OT (http://www.logos.com/product/4231/analytical-key-to-the-old-testament) anymore, do I?

Anyone have any feedback for me who own the HALOT or Analytical Key? Big Smile

I find the full HALOT amazingly useful... whenever I can't find (via quick search) the word in BDB, I almost always find it in HALOT.

If you're into language studies, its usage info is invaluable. I'm a pastor...

I have both since I got the concise version with an upgrade. I never use the concise version. I always use either HALOT or BDB -- mostly HALOT.

The Analytical Key is pretty much made redundant by a reverse interlinear. Here's a bunch of Hebrew lexicons for you to compare:

I own HALOT and if I were you I would get CHALOT. HALOT is obviously a great resource, but it's too much information most of the time, and I find that what it does give me is not generally what I'm looking for unless I'm into a deep word study. HALOT generally has little else besides, a definition, references, and the Hebrew context. This is great if you have written at least one Hebrew primer, but for the rest of us we want some explanation and analysis. I find CHALOT great for quick glosses, but the Theological Wordbook of the Old Testament even better for analysis. My favorite tool for Hebrew word study is the New international Dictionary of Old Testament Theology and Exegesis. It doesn't have every word, but it has all the important ones. It does a great job of sorting through how the words are used and the implications. I suspect that if you buy HALOT you will find that you don't use it that much. Like trying to drink from a chinese fire hose.

Frankly I think you'd be wasting your money on Concise-HALOT. It's almost inevitable you'll get HALOT itself at some point. If I were you and I didn't want to go to deep yet, I'd get Gesenius ... it's affordable, organized well, heavily referenced by your other resources and frankly easier to read than HALOT. It is older but if you don't have it, you'll eventually get that one too! The Analytical Key isn't much more useful than simply the Lexham hebrew interlinear with Logos4 word analysis. Just my own opinion.

Analytical Key is a very different sort of resource than HALOT, as was mentioned above. Logos' type for this is "Bible Notes" which is what their designation for a study Bible. But, though I have it, I've never found it helpful.

I have CHALOT and don't use it as my primary Hebrew lexicon, and in fact rarely look at it at all any more (I did when I first got it with Platinum). It is concise, which is okay sometimes, and based on HALOT, which is good, but generally I use the Enhanced Brown Driver Briggs (BDB), which is much more thorough than CHALOT. And although BDB isn't as highly respected as HALOT, it is still a highly respected standard, and the one required by my seminary (back in the 80's, at least). If you have Scholar's (or above) you already have BDB, and so (IMHO) don't need CHALOT.

There's no question that for serious OT work HALOT is the best way to go. But I'm not sure the price would justify my use of it (my interest is more in NT studies), and that the value of HALOT would exceed what I'm getting through BDB enough to justify the cost. Maybe I'll get it some day, if it goes on sale for 50% (or more) off. YMMV.

In summary, I think you are right in saying that with the Lexham resources you have, you don't need the Analytical Key. I would add that if you have Scholars, and thus BDB, you don't need CHALOT. So, if you're looking to spend some money, save it for HALOT, though unless you're needing that level of OT scholarship, you may find BDB to be sufficient.
